Shaggy, you probably won't find too many of what you call "home cooking" type restaurants out here in California either.

Oh, and garlic mashed potatoes are a big hit here as well.

When we really want some veggies (or want to get rid of all the excess summer pickins) we make something called rattatui (not sure of the spelling)- which is a vegetable stew. I don't care for things like black-eyed peas when I have fresh snow peas or Roma beans to choose from. Two or three veggies with dinner is not unusual for dinner here in the summertime. Soups at home usually have 4 or more veggies in them.

My experience from restaurants north of the Mason Dixon line, they have vegetables but 1) they don't know how to cook them, they are darn near raw, and 2) there is a depressing tendency not to give you a choice of individual vegetables but have a generic mix just called ''vegetables'' on the menu. I like to choose and I hate the generic mix, which represents a restaurant too lazy to give their customers a choice. Here is eastern Europe, I also see the generic mix far too often.

That's funny -- when I am visiting people in the South, I think people tend to over-cook their veggies and add unnecessary fat / grease to them! Now that I think of it, the over-cooking tends to correlate to their age -- the older they are, the more they cook their veggies.

Personally I like mine lightly steamed, with a bit of a "crunch", and then only seasoned (no butter, etc.). To each their own!

I do know that a lot of them don't what grits are.

Having a dad from Louisiana and a mom from Idaho, I got to experience the whole spectrum of veggies growing up. One night we might have black eyed peas or red beans and rice, and the next night we'd have T-bones and baked potatoes. Probably explains why I eat everything.....

Had to laugh at Kurt's comment. I never really realized that veggies didn't have to be massacred to be eaten. That was the way my dad liked 'em, and so that's the way my mom fixed 'em. I now steam them al dente and typically eat them with a little lemon seasoning -- sometimes drenched with butter -- as a tribute to my dad, I suppose.

I still love to cook both "southern" and "western", and any other way as well, so hopefully my kids grow up with diverse tastes. They like grits, gumbo and boiled shrimp, and they also like stuff like guacamole, burgers and fries, and grilled halibut.

when we were visiting the Carolinas, we were told they thought grease was a vegetable - nothing but fried food.

Ok, this is my first visit to G&A's cafe and I was laughing the whole time reading this post... this forum is much more fun than reviewing tax alerts, so I had to weigh in.

I'm from Long Island, work in NYC and now live in north Jersey (I swear I was dragged kicking and screaming)

We have vegetables and lots of them.. and they can be found all over the tri-state area! I buy/cook/eat them numerous times throughout the day.

When I hear that someone is looking for a restaurant with some "home cookin" I immediately think of down south style fare (not a variety of veggies) - i.e., I'd send you to Virgils or Sweet Potato and Pecan...

If I went to restaurant that didn't serve any vegetables, I would be equally surprised and disappointed...

I like good grits, not the instant kind. I was getting together with a few tuggers over new years a few years back and offered to bring some real grits to cook for breakfast and they said don't bother, they didn't want to try them. To each their own!! shaggy

Right now I'm soaking pintos overnight to make pintos with a ham bone for seasoning. This is to go with stew beef and rice. I can't wait. Will be sharing the beans with my neighbors as I'm making a big pot full.!! Yummy
I will be right down... save me a bowl full.

Sorry you lost weight in Pokies!!!

                          Yep.

Ok so I am born and raised in So Cal with roots in Georgia and South Carolina. Visited the south every two years of my growing up life for family reunion.

Remember going Cafeteria type places. S & S Maybe? Picking your vegetables was required. I was a kid-I didn't want vegetables. Ok, give me the green beans. OMG! Devoured them. Came home-told Mom-we need to eat green beans-I love them. She cooks them. They are AWFUL!! Mom-what just happened there? She tells me the ones I ate were probably cooked in "fatback" HUH? What's that? Fatback, Bacon, Ham hock-that's the key.

Also, Shaggy-I do understand your plight. I can also remember spending 3 weeks at my Grandmothers one summer. I most certainly had enough of chicken fried this and that, sausage biscuits, okra, peas, and vegetables from her garden. She tells me we are going out to dinner one night. I'm a teenager-I can't wait for that burger and french fries. Where do we go? The Black Eye Pea! More of the same. I was so mad!

I agree-I think foods are very regional. Here in California, why, rice and beans are staples We also use A LOT of avacado. I once asked for avacado in Arizona on a sandwich and the girl smiled at me and said "You're from California, aren't you?"

It's all good. I had no idea what a lobster roll was until recently. I am now obsessed and want to go to Maine to eat my way through lobster rolls.
