One of the passengers, 23 year-old William Zuhosky, was a student of mine 10 years ago. He was sitting in the back of the plane and had his glasses knocked off. Everything was blurry and the water rose up to his neck. He stripped down to his underwear thinking that he was going to have to swim and didn't want his clothing to weigh him down. Pretty unbelievable.

I did not think the water came in that high.

The people on the ferries were saying that some of the passengers standing on the wings were already up to their waists in the cold water, and some of them jumped into the water to try and swim when the boats got close.

Chap7's student was mentioned in the NY Times today, not by name, but as an example of how terrifying the experience was for the passengers....

An update from my local newspaper. The pilot, his wife and children received invitations to the inaugeration. Also, he has been asked not to speak to the news (that would mean the interview he was supposed to do with Matt Lauer) until further investigation has been done on the aircraft. No word whether he was going to honor that request or not.
