  • My Pay Raise

Before the Spring Break on March 15th there was an emergency meetings for all teachers in my school. As many of my friends from Tug, Tstips know I'm teaching High School in a very low income area in Palm Beach County at the same school my wife is a bi lingual guidance counselor.

Apparently 5 high schools got approval for 20 percent raises and mine was one of them. I must work one hour xtra a day and 10 days a year more.

My pension with the NYPD is fine but honestly things are expensive in South Florida and they don't pay teachers well here. The surprise pay raise for my wife and I puts us in a great position to enjoy life here. Many folks are flipping their homes and moving To georgia, Tennessee where the cost of living is cheaper.

So folks you never know. Good things can happen to good people and it just encourages me to wake up and have a possitive attitude each day.

Thats great Scott. And the world looks a whole lot better if your attitude is generally positive. Seems it has worked well for you. Congratulations.

          Hi Scott,

That's great but you have to work more hours so I hope that you enjoy your job. You can make a big difference in the outlook of life of these young people! I still remember my High School teacher to this day as she was the best.

          Congratulations!

            Glad to hear that Scott.
My brother and his wife were both teachers and I commend anyone who takes on this profession.
Also, it's a shame that we as a society don't value our teachers more than we do. It's such an important job.

I think society does value teachers but salary and benefits do vary from state to state just like police officers. In NYC the teachers have been doing very well of late the last few contracts while the police are not. Immagine a NYPD rookie cop making 25,000 when he enters the academy.

                Pay Raise

That is wonderful Scott. My husband and I ditched the high paying jobs 3 years ago in Southern NJ and moved to Eastern NC, where I write (in PJ's at my kitchen table) and he works for 1 of the 2 largest home improvement stores. There was a glitch, which they have gotten away with for years, his title, salary plus mandatory hourly overtime of 8-10 hours a week. They would take an hourly rate i.e. $10.00 an hour for 40 hrs. $400.00, 10 hrs. mandatory overtime, 50 hours divided into $400.00 = $8.00 per hour divided by 1/3 = $2.67. So, these employees were making less then minimum wage before taxes. Well, they did this all over the country and a class action law suit insued. They lost millions last month in California, (but actually gained because they have had the sweat equity and all the interest on the money they have not paid out for years. ) But now my husband has "a mandatory" 40 hr. week. He calculated the "specialists" gave an 8-10 hrs. a week, 32-40 hrs. a month 7-7 1/2 weeks a year. It is just amazing how this has been going on since 1976. My husands employees are interesting the comments have been, "I can't believe they screwed with our overtime", and d/h said, you have been getting screwed for years and not realizing it. He has never had a 40 hr. a week job. TS vacations are looking better, just as we sold one of our last week. lol

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Great Scott that is good news ......say congrats to Maria for me. You both deserve it. Now you will have more pocket change for an NFL/MLB game if I can make it out there one of these days.

.....no more tickets on the floor?????

John, The Florida Panthers ran a ticket promotion if you bought tickets for 4 games they would give you free ones if they won any of the 4, so when he mention tickets on the floor the anwer is yes, I found 2 that said holiday on it and I'm taking two folks to the game Friday against the penquins.
