There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D

I had heard that St. Valentine was a priest who performed marriages for Christians when it was illegal to do so. He was jailed, but soon curried favor with the Emperor. When he tried to convert the Emperor to Christianity, he was sentenced to death.
