ipod question

I purchased an ipod (possibly this summer). All my music on it I got from uploading my cds and downloading the music to my ipod. I did set up an itunes account but have never purchased anything.

When I plug my ipod into my computer and then go to itunes, itunes does not list my ipod as being there. I even went ot "my computer" and it is not listed when plugged in. Any ideas of what the problem could be and how to solve it/ TIA

This has happened to me too from time to time.
I have found if I log on to itunes first, let it update itself or whatever it does, and then plug the iPod in after being logged into iTunes for a minute, the iPod always does register and everything on it comes up.
I'm far from an expert, have no idea if it really makes a difference, but it seems to work this way; just sharing my experience.

My USB ports and the cable for the ipod work because I opened itunes 1st, then connected my turned off ipod and it turned on when connected to itunes.

I think I know what caused the problem bit don't know how to fix it.

I bought a new printer a few months ago and when I installed it, I deleted the old printer that was listed in "control panel" under printers and other hardware. Someplace on my computer it gave me a message that sometimes when hardware is deleted, all the hardware is deleted. My new printer is listed and I'm wondering if deleting the old one, deleted the listing for the ipod. Sound reasonable? Anyone have a solutionfor that? I no longer have my old printer so I can't reinstall it.

I spent the afternoon running diagnostics and everything is ok except for my computer recognizing my ipod.
