My son made the high school math team this year and they had a meet this past weekend. They did something unusual as part of the competition. They had each team write a poem for Valentine's day. Here is what two of his teammates came up with:

After the meet, the hosts held a poetry contest with a Valentine's Day theme.

Iolani won first place there too with the following poem written by Anders Lee and William Chambers. After reciting the winning poem to the entire league, Anders received a rousing round of applause.

    Your love is my discriminant;
without it, I am not real.
My love for you is like the square root of 3,
    completely irrational.
Without you, I am divided by zero,
    undefined
You are the c squared in my a squared plus b squared,
    you complete me.
    Like pi,
our love will go on forever.
    I give my r = 1 - sin(theta) to you.

(Note: the graph of r = 1 - sin(theta) in the polar coordinate system is a cardioid, which is a heart-shaped graph)

I remember a Math Club at Cedar Point a few years ago with t-shirts that said:

Friends don't let friends drink and derive.

Was that "MathCounts" ? If so, I've been a volunteer here in Massachusetts.

No, math counts stops after 8th grade. I thought it continued. What happens in 9th grade is league competition.

My school never had a math club but if they did, I would not have been invited to join.

That's great. My daughter is a math geek. She wears the Pi shirt on 3/14 each year and makes a pie to celebrate. She has a binary clock that she loves. There is a catalog called Think Geek that sells all kinds of clever stuff for the "alternative thinkers".

“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

                “You shouldn't wear that body.”

That's cute. My kids count in binary as well. But, they get a kick out of showing everyone 132.
