  • Hubby Retired Today!

Today was my DH's last day in the post office. He took an early out at age
    52. I am proud of him - 34 years in the same job. He was the utmost professonal letter carrier, and was on his latest route for the past 20 years. He became like part of the family to many of his patrons. He rejoiced with them in the good times (births, marriages) and cried with them in the bad times (illness, death). You would not believe how many people come out to tell the mailman their personal business. He was invited to block parties, christenings, etc. He received a nice watch and letters of commendation from the post office. He also received the National Safety Council's "Million Mile Award" for driving a million miles (30 years) without an accident or violation. That was a big deal because hardly anyone achieves that. Today several of his patrons came out to say goodbye and wish him well. He received some cards and a couple of beautiful letters. I am glad that his last day on the job was joyful for him.
He will have to find a job to supplement his pension, but for now he can relax and enjoy a little time off.

Jacki, that's great! Our letter carrier just retired and we really miss her. A good one is a gem.

A story like this makes me feel good again that some people like their job and do it well and that it is appreciated too by the people he got to know over the years. He should be proud of his "Million Mile Award" too and his 34 years of service.

I wish him the best Jacki and hope that he will stay healthy so he can enjoy his retirement too when he is ready.

A big Ditto here. My husband has 30 years on the job....it's becoming so unusual these days...just not the way things are done anymore, I guess.

I wish him and you only the best for retirement.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

What a wonderful story. My DH took early retirement in November at 59. He too was on the job for 30+ years. The retirement income for us as for you doesn't cover all and mine will need to find something too, but maybe something he really enjoys doing that is different from what he did do!

I have the highest regard for letter carriers; it is a very difficult job and no matter what the weather the mail MUST get delivered. I see our letter carrier out in stuff that I certainly wouldn't want to have to go out in!

In this day finding someone on "the job" for more than 5 years is rare. Companies do not realize what they lose when someone with such vast experience as your DH and mine retires. I am sure that your DH could do every job in the Postal Service and do it well. I am sure he will be difficult to replace, not just for the customers that loved him and considered him part of the family, but for the Service too.

I hope he soon opens another exciting chapter in his life.

Congratulations on a job well done!

I have a home-bound relative whose mail carrier is retiring, she is devastated as she looked forward to their daily conversations!

Hope he enjoys a long and healthy retirement!

Bets are that you will kill your DH BEFORE he retires
