Today was my DH's last day in the post office. He took an early out at age
52. I am proud of him - 34 years in the same job. He was the utmost professonal letter carrier, and was on his latest route for the past 20 years. He became like part of the family to many of his patrons. He rejoiced with them in the good times (births, marriages) and cried with them in the bad times (illness, death). You would not believe how many people come out to tell the mailman their personal business. He was invited to block parties, christenings, etc. He received a nice watch and letters of commendation from the post office. He also received the National Safety Council's "Million Mile Award" for driving a million miles (30 years) without an accident or violation. That was a big deal because hardly anyone achieves that. Today several of his patrons came out to say goodbye and wish him well. He received some cards and a couple of beautiful letters. I am glad that his last day on the job was joyful for him.
He will have to find a job to supplement his pension, but for now he can relax and enjoy a little time off.
