                Pat,

We just asked the same of a filmmaker friend - she recommend the Canon G10. Too many bells and whistles for me, but it takes great pics.

Temp of 3 this morning here and not going above freezing 'till Friday. I've had enough winter- hope this is the end. Ice storms make a pretty photo- until the power goes out.

As new models with technological advances are produced, fine older models become more economical.
No matter what I suggest, please research to see what is right for you.

The CANON G10 looks great. Big price!

I want to replace my cam, but I don’t like several lenses to tote. Besides, they do cost a lot. I've been looking a little.

This is my choice so far, but I’m still looking to find something for less.

CANON PowerShot SX10 IS. 10-megapixel resolution and optical image stabilizer technology.
This camera is on the cutting edge of advanced technology, with an incredibly powerful optical zoom, and DIGIC 4 image processor for high-performance face and motion detection. Equipped with a zoom lens with a focal length of 5.0-100mm that allows you to shoot any scene from wide-angle to telephoto.

Includes video with stereo audio. 20X optical zoom (28 to 560 mm "35 mm" equivalent) would require 3 lenses on a DSLR to cover that range. Its small size makes it easy to pack for travel. Since it uses AA batteries, a couple of packs of rechargables will enable shooting for hours.

Problems with dust on the sensor should not be a problem either as it is an enclosed system.

VCM (Voice Coil Motor) for high-speed, quiet, energy-efficient lens movement with precise control. Focal length is conveniently indicated on the lens barrel. The lens is optimized to fully exploit its zoom length and wide shooting angle in concert with the camera's high 10.0-megapixel resolution. UD glass effectively suppresses chromatic aberration, while enhanced negative refractive power ensures that distortion at the wide-angle is also corrected. Further aberration is controlled with the inclusion of a double-sided aspherical glass-molded lens and ultra-high refraction index lens.

                    $330 to $399
                    --------------------------------------------------------

There are many Point and Shoot versions.

I find the CANON Powershot including the 1100 model from under $100 to $250.
These fit the purse or pocket nicely.

My daughter has a similar Kodak that she likes.

I was going to get a Powershot for me. Small, simple, inexpensive.

The G10 was recommended by a pro, so I'm not surprised the pricetag is high. It was actually the G8 she recommended, so to Robert's point, it might be a good deal if you can find one online, as it's been discontinued and replaced with the G10 (perhaps a G9 in between, unless marketeers decided that odd numbers are somehow bad)...

That's amazing. Where do you even start to dig out? That much snow would probably bury most single story homes!
BTW - We are celebrating here is PA. It's finally reached 40! The crocus bulbs are blooming. Spring can't be too far away!

We had a HI of 32 for two days. Today was in the 40s and it'll be 77 by Sunday.

That's more like it. Just enough winter cold to remind us of why we no longer reside in Michigan.
