What's your favorite city in Europe?

I haven't been to many of the major cities but of those I have visited Barcelona was my favorite. I'd go back anytime. Very friendly, happy people. Great shopping, fabulous food, easy public transportation and a ton of things to see. Prague would be second just because it is so historic. Vienna was beautiful but, good Lord, was it expensive. Higher than any place I've ever been anywhere.

Small towns, I'd say Brugge. Just a fun place to spend a few days.

Oh, the Southeast area of Germany & Munich.....So, that's Bavaria. Oops! I had a feeling that I didn't know where Bavaria was.

That area sounds lovely, too, and being as it's mav's pick, I'm sure it's beautiful.

Schwangau, Fussen, Mittenwald, Garmisch, Berchtesgaden, the Obersalzberg, Ramsau, Oberammergau, Ettal, Lindau, and so many other little towns, small villages, and spots of heaven! I love England also, France is lovely, and Rome and Italy in general great, but Bavaria aaaahhhhh Heaven!

I have never been to Europe because I didn't want the hassle of money exchange, language barriers and driving on the wrong side of the road. Now in my old age I want to go!! My first choice would be Switzerland because I loved my trip to the rockies of Canada and my Mom went there and loved the pics from there. I would also like to go to London/Rome/Venice and the islands of Greece. I'm sure anyplace would be heaven. shaggy

I think United Kingdom is the only country that drives on the left these days. As for the language barrier, I've found that if you learn a few key phases and attempt to communicate with them in their native language first, they are much more likely to be friendly toward you. (And they will switch to English to stop you from butchering their language. )

I think United Kingdom is the only country that drives on the left these days.

Malta is another European country with left-side driving, and Cayman Islands on this side of the pond - both with historic UK ties. I think South Africa too.

Great thread - I hope to visit Europe every year for the next several years. Since I love Italy so much, I plan on returning EOY and try a new city on the off years. Madrid and Vienna are in plan, but now I've got to squeeze Bavaria on my wish list as well!

I agree.....I spent 8 days in Rome, and it wasn't enough. So much to see, and experience. It's amazing to go out to dinner, and walk past the Colosseum, or have lunch sitting at a table in front of the Pantheon, etc.

I too will return.

Seriously, I would love to jump on the Italian Band Wagon with you! I went on my high school junior year trip to Italy and then again a few years later and just remember the warmth of the people and the unbelievable history of the country.

I LOVED Barcelona - will be returning for a 3-4 day visit in Fall 2010 before a cruise.

Cadiz was amazing - thanks for the reminder Emmy.

I spent time on Killarney,Ireland a few years ago - what a fun loving city with ssoooooo much to see in the surrounding area as well.

Also returning to spend a week in Dublin this year....we did a whirlwind day there a few years ago and this is a city that deserves its own trip!
So much history and beauty there.

Lake Como, Italy was beautiful....as was Zug, Switzerland....the Alps are spectacular.

And REALLY looking forward to a return to Paris...again did a two day trip before - just want to go and relax and soak in the atmosphere.....

Barcelona seems to be a favorite of many.....I've been reading on the net that there's a real security problem there, tho. Seems that although Europe in general in known for pic-pockets, Barcelona seems to be on the top of the list for theft, pic-pockets, etc. I guess you just need to be very security minded when traveling anywhere, these days.
