It is spreading. Here's a link to a google map with the locations that have appeared.

I suppose since the disease has already crossed borders and oceans, banning travel wouldn't help much. I did see that a new Canadian case is a woman who just returned from Cabo; her flu strain hasn't been confirmed yet, but of course, the liklihood is that it is the same as the others. They haven't said if her flight back was direct from Cabo or if the plane stopped elsewhere--like Mexico City--either.

      Lawren,

It said in the article on New York's St Francis School that the girl(s) had gone on a Spring Break trip to Cancun. Do you know if that is so?

        Eric,

I will ask my sister. I know my niece didn't go to Mexico but the Dominican Republic. I'm sure she will know where in Mexico they went.

CDC has raised the level to 4 and advised all to avoid non-essential travel to Mexico. School has been cancelled throughout the Republic of Mexico. Link to Washington Post article:

In a bit of excellent timing, Alaska Airlines has been running a series of one-day specials to various cities in their route network. Today's special: Puerto Vallarta!!!

Just as an aside schools have been closed in Mexico until May 5 or 6, to be pro-active in trying to curtail the spread of illness. Many such precautionary measures have been taken. PV nightclubs have also been shut down for a week due to large numbers of people and ventilation, again precautionary.

As of tonight there have been no reported case in the state of Jalisco (PV is in that state as is where I live).........there were 18 suspicious case but they have been deemed NOT swine flu.........

Yes the CDC posted an advisory for all non-essential travel to Mexico. Unfortunately it has already traveled to many parts of the world , there is also an advisory from the UK for travel to US and Mexico.

We just have to wait and see what occurs next...the numbers remain low in light of numbers who die every year from typical flu, so we can only hope this dies out quick......

washingtonpost.com interesting article, thanks for the link
The mayor of Mexico City, Marcelo Ebrard, said he is considering a complete shutdown of this city of 20 million people, including halting all public transportation. One of the world's busiest subway systems seemed much emptier than normal on Monday, with many people wearing masks to protect themselves. Mexico City malls, movie theaters, museums and restaurants were all closed. Two federal government employees, who both spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that only about a quarter of the employees in their offices showed up to work Monday and that those who did were careful not to touch their colleagues.

"I feel like we are living a science fiction movie," said Cristian González, a film director who was wearing a surgical mask as he stocked up on groceries at a supermarket. "I am 51 years old, and this is the first time in my life Mexico has experienced a crisis like this. . . . This is totally new."
Whilst many tourists may be focused on the problem of catching the flu whilst on holiday, an equally important consideration is the impact this kind of distruption will have on the countries operations. I would be concerned about the ability to provide essential services - safe water supply, reliable electricity supply, food distribution etc.

The best way to keep from getting sick is to wash your hands frequently. I'm not an expert, but I would guess that there is more of a risk catching the swine flu on a plane (where all the air - and germs - are contained and recycled) than on the ground in Mexico. This should be a wake-up call. It's just a matter of time before there's a nasty viral pandemic (worldwide outbreak). Everyone should have contingency plans and be ready to shelter in place (see the CDC and FEMA websites for tips). If there is a serious illness, the only way to contain it will be to issue quarantines and restrict public gatherings. Sorry to throw a scare to everyone, but health experts say it's not a matter of IF, but rather WHEN.

All good posts here and as we're an intelligent group, we are only getting our information from reliable sources, CDC & WHO and local public health depts.
