CPU is Centrol Processing Unit. On your computer that's the Pentium chip set on the motherboard, which is where all of the real computing activity occurs. If you're running Windows XP, hit ctl-alt-del (hold down the ctl and alt keys, then press the dekete key ONCE while still holding down ctl and alt keys) to call up the Windows Task Manager. Then click on the "Performance" tab, and you can see your CPU usage.

The BBS software is really nothing but a specialized database. All of the threads and replies are stored as individual records or items in the database. When you open a thread, the CPU identifies and retrives the posts that make up the thread, and puts them in the proper order. Other features, such as showing online users, recording the IP address of users, etc., also require CPU resources. It appears that in making the migration to the new server, TUG wound up with a host that is undersized to handle the BBS at its current size and level of usage.

Most likely, the server requirement for the migration was based on the CPU demands of the previous version of the VBulletin software. The upgrade, though, has more bells and whistles, which uses more CPU.

It's like upgrading your office software from Office 98 to Office 2000 or to Office XP. Evn though you might not be doing anything differently now than you were with the old software, the new software requires more CPU resources simply to operate.

Am I glad I checked here after not getting into TUG. I am so ignorant about the computer that first thing I think of is "OMG, it's a virus"

          Hope

                Explanation

I got this explanation from Bill Rogers:

Our TUG BBS has been turnoff by our new server because we were using
                too much
server activity. Prior to moving to this new ISP ( Dreamhost ), we were
                told
that it would provide the service necessary to run our bbs. Needlessly
                to say
we are very unhappy about what is happening.

We are working on correcting this problem and hope to have the bbs up
                and
                running again asap.

                thanks for your patience.

Maybe Bill should employ the programmer from this web site to help at TUG's.

Except that it's not a programming problem.

What Bill ought to do is find out who hosts the Disney Boards. That site uses the same bulletin board software and it is about 8 times bigger.

So, the problem is not the scalability of the software, it is the hosting environment.

It's also the same software used here - vBulletin.

Actually, TUG is running a slightly more recent version - vBulletin 3.5.4 vs. vBulletin 3.5.2 used here at TS4Ms.

And it's absolutely a hosting environment issue. There's no reason a competent host shouldn't be able to handle the software without overtaxing CPU.

And the DisBoard site is considerably less responsive (more lag) than this one or TUG. Not the worst but not good either.
