  • Warehouse Club Face-Off: The Overall Savings

Beyond the bulk food, cavernous shopping spaces and almost guaranteed savings (consumers save an average of 30% per item at warehouse clubs, according to a fall 2008 study by industry publication Warehouse Club Focus, warehouse clubs like Sam's Club), Costco and BJs, do have some distinct differences. And that could mean a big difference in savings for shoppers.

While the most obvious disparity is the annual membership fee -- $50 at Costco, $45 at BJ's (BJs is offering two months free with this coupon until July 6) and $40 at Sam's -- in-store prices and policies play an even bigger role when it comes to your bottom line at checkout.

That's why it's important to compare prices on the items you need most frequently. A gallon of skim milk at Sam's Club, for example, costs $1.88, while Costco charges $2.29. Need to stock up on Secret deodorant? At BJ's, it's 81% cheaper than at the supermarket, while it's 67% less at Sam's Club.

Another factor: coupons. BJ's is the only warehouse club to accept manufacturers' coupons, which can give its prices an edge over the competition. (There are times, however, when combining those coupons with the sales in the weekly circular can result in even better deals at your local supermarket, says Teri Gault, founder of shopping site The Grocery Game.)

Nonmembers who want to try out a warehouse club will also have to weigh the surcharge they'll pay at checkout. Costco charges nonmembers 5%, Sam's Club tacks on 10%, and BJ's, 15%. Clubs usually permit nonmembers to purchase alcohol and prescription medications without having to pay a fee.

SmartMoney.com went shopping for household staples and other items shoppers might regularly purchase to see which stores offer the best savings. We compared prices for 17 items from three warehouse clubs in the New York City metro region against one another and those at local stores, including supermarket chain C-Town, Rite Aid, Petco and K&D Wines & Spirits for items the supermarket didn't carry. Because warehouse clubs tend to carry bigger sizes, prices were adjusted for a unit-by-unit comparison where necessary. We also factored in manufacturers' coupons where available, since both BJ's and local stores accept them.

The results: Even for nonmembers, warehouse clubs offer plenty of good deals, with some of the best savings on over-the-counter medications, personal-care products and pantry staples. There were exceptions to that rule, however -- most notably, bell peppers at the warehouse clubs were almost twice as much as they were at the supermarket, and prescription cholesterol medication was slightly more expensive at one of the clubs than at a chain pharmacy. The winner? Sam's Club's prices were consistently among the best, although BJ's coupon policy made it a serious contender in many categories.

    Here's our side-by-side shopping list.

*Sam's Club member prices are from the Secaucus, N.J., location. BJ's member prices are from the East Setauket, N.Y., location. Costco member prices are from Brooklyn, N.Y., location. Nonwarehouse club prices are from New York locations of C-Town, Rite Aid, Petco and K&D Wines & Spirits. Prices have been adjusted per unit for comparison.

You know that's all good if you only buy what you went in there to buy but I find that when I shop at these super clubs I come home with alot of impulse buys that are "great deals" but honestly didn't need them. So I end up doing better at my local Publix supermarket and getting way more variety for about the same money. Since I'm single the only thing that makes sense for me to buy at Costco is the Cat Food & Litter. Maybe the supplements too.

The quality of the food at Costco is what I like best about it. The fruit and vegetables and meat are all really good, better than most of the local grocery stores. Also Costco has excellent labor practices.

We used to tend to over buy at BJ's, $300 min each time. But now we just buy what we need. The only one that is near us is BJ's which is fine but it would be-nice if there were others in the area. One bulk chain that you get great deals at that was not mentioned is Restaurant Depot. IMO I think RD has better prices when buying in bulk.

I go to Restaurant Depot with a friend who is a caterer. Don't you need a genuine food-industry connection to get in there? The one by us definitely checks credentials fairly often and fairly seriously.

The local Restaurant Depot is better on seafood than any other place. The quality is extremely high, and the minimum quantities are usually two pounds. That's almost all I get there, though--for almost everything else, the quantities are just too much. Although I did get 1,000 paper cups there about three years ago. Still in the lower hundreds on using those puppies....

Very well said. That was what I was trying to imply but you said it so beautifully in so few words. What a gift. I wish I had it. But as you see I rant on and on to get my point across. One day maybe I'll learn.

I make a list and go in for specific things once a week. I drive right by twice a week. I know the dairy prices, paper products, bottled water and yes catfood (Fancy Feast is cheaper at BJs than PetSmart on a day to day comparison) are the bargains and pretty much where I go.

Sometimes I can beat BJs with circular specials and because my Shoprite will double manufacturer coupons under $1. Like for chicken breasts. cheaper at shoprite. Peanut butter? go to BJs.

As with most things in this world knowing the prices is key. From timeshares, to clothes, airfare to groceries.

BTW Chriske if you havent tried the Exiquiscat litter at PetSmart do. It's their house brand. $3/20lbs and beats the heck out of most clay litters I've tried and very cheap.

Wow that is cheap. Good to know. I wonder if I have a PetSmart by me?

Recently, my DD's cat came to live with us, and I've been buying the supplies from BJ's. They have decent prices, but I think the cat litter was $14-$15.

Angela you must. PetSmart is all over the place!

This is not a scoopable. Call me old fashioned but I'd rather dump the whole litter box 2 or 3 times a week.

Petsmart will take local competitor couponsas well as manufacturer coupons . We have a local coupon mag delivered each month ( Not Valpak) but it's $5 off if you buy something over $10. So my big bag of Purina One is $7 instead of $12.

I used to clip coupons and watch the circulars until my life got too busy that I just don't watch the prices anymore. Also no ones does double coupons in Miami anymore. I figure about $150 for food into my budget for the week be it take out or grocery stores or whatever and don't stress about it. Most of the time it's Wendy's drive thru with a salad for me.

I agree with you here but it's more fun to shop online for me than to deal with Miami's traffic and hassles of shopping. I'd rather budget for everyday and save on my vacations. It's more fun that way.

Haven't tried the Exiquiscat yet but I think I'll buy it next time. Thanks for the tip. Is this the newspaper stuff? My cats didn't care for that much, nor for the sawdust stuff.

                      Thanks again.

I just checked their store locater, and the closet one is quite far from me, 25 minutes, or so....I have a PetCo by me, but not a PetSmart.

Good for you Lawren! $7 for the big bag of Purina one is a great deal. We're using Purina one's "Indoor cat Food." That is also about $14 at BJ's, I think.

I HATE shopping of any kind, the internet is the best thing that ever happened! Know your brand, know your size and off you go Unfortunately food requires in the bricks shopping and so off I go but it's going to be the best price or we're not eating it that week.

My sister won't cut coupons. I always have. $150 for one person? I do that for 3 each week and that includes a bottomless male teenager and his father! No wonder the kits live on a strict budget!

Just your regular clay compare to Tidycat Multicat. It's a great deal and works far better.

Do you prefer Chris or Christine? and you may notice that many of us own cats and have avatars that are our pets. Mine is a far different story but we play games here and a few decided I didn't need my horse as my avatar for winter months I needed to be a beach barbie...long story.

Costco is fantastic for pet items. My poor dog (12 lbs) loves Purina Benefuls...or at least she loved it till I bought a 40-pound bag of it at Costco for $25. About six months ago. I'm just kidding, she actually still loves it.

The dried-chicken treats from Costco are her absolute faves. They cost about $14 for a big, big bag, and grocery stores charge about $4 for a tiny bag, so that's a good deal.

We don't have BJ's (actually never heard of them!), just Sam's and Costco. Never joined Sam's (personal bias against the Walton family ...) but LOVE Costco.

Quality food!!!, clean, great staff, and I like when they have coupons on the things I'm going to buy anyway. Gas is usually 5 - 10 cents less than anywhere else. Great return policies. Good selection.

We have definitely saved money. Sure, hauling a 40lb bag of dog food can be laborious, but I don't have to do it often!

Finally the duck breast jerky for dogs came back - even better than the chicken!!! My girl will do nearly ANYTHING to get one of those!
