I am in a similar boat as Glitter, but slightly different. We have a family plan with T-mobile and we want to switch to iPhones. So, the choice of device is done. But, we are waiting for the new iPhones to come out. It sounds like we should wait for Verizon, too. I do want to be able to tether my phone to my laptop. That by itself would make it worth it.

Does anyone know when the new iPhones will be coming out? My current phone is a t-mobile dash which I detest. The green phone button doesn't work any longer. So, I can't dial anyone anymore on it. I can answer, return calls from history and contacts. If I want to call someone, I have to store a new contact and then call from contacts. Very painful. My wife's phone drops calls about 50% of the time. The only phones that work are my kids' phones.

Iphone 3G does not cut and paste. Very annoying when the previous phone was a HP Ipaq which could do all that and more. I heard they're fixing that oversight in the next upgrade but who knows, as we've been waiting for it for a year now.

For anyone on a GSM network (ATT, T-Mobile) I'd suggest looking at the unlocked Nokia phones. The N85, N96, N97 and 5800 are all very nice phones.

Jim, there are lots of rumors out there but nothing yet on the Apple web site. The AT&T contract was for five years and they may change it after that so you can stay with Verizon or Sprint. I see many little smart phones like iPhone everywhere so the competition is fierce and I like it.

PS. Here is a rumor about Verizon!

Jim, the new iPhones were announced today... available 6/19

iPhone 3G S First Take | iPhone Atlas - CNET Reviews

And though I have never lost a cell phone, I just happened to have lost mine in a taxi on Saturday night, accelerating my decision. There is still a chance I'll get it back, but it almost doesn't matter since I spent a long time today comparing Verizon/AT&T and researching phones.

SO, I am thinking iPhone. The reality is, I don't spend a lot of talk minutes anymore, I mainly use the phone for texting and need to be able to email. I need a new iPod, which the iPhone will take care of, and I am an Apple girl to the core (bad pun, sorry). I do sometimes need to make work calls from my cell, but I don't do that while I'm on the move (that's where AT&T really breaks down in the city, calls are constantly dropped while in taxis, etc...).

AT&T won't cost me any more than Verizon, though I like Verizon's plan better (friends and family, etc.). But AT&T has rollover minutes...

I love my iPhone for everything except the phone part. I've been with AT&T for many years and never had trouble with dropped calls and poor reception until I got the iPhone. I had heard that the first generation phone was pretty bad, so I waited, but if my second generation is any indication, the first one must have been downright awful.

I am with T-Mobile, which has been okay for me. It certainly doesn't have the coverage of Verizon, that is its downside.

I am looking at the Blackberry 8900 which according to reports I have read is a pretty top end phone, only missing 3G. If Verizon had it, I would jump ship and move to Verizon. Because of an app I need, I can only use a couple phones, the Iphone and BB being the ones I would consider. BB is winning my totally logical choice, plus I just want one.

And they have dropped the current model to $99, and the new $199 model has 16G. We are going to have long lines on 6/19, and I will be on one.

I'm sticking with Verizon and Palm Treo for now. I have an iTouch and my fingers must be fat because I constantly touch the wrong letters/numbers.

And I am hearing that the iPhone is backordered two weeks, and don't have time to go to the Apple Store near me today. There is one in the city that is open 24/7, maybe I'll drop in there over the weekend at some point to see what the story is.

My wife pre-ordered mine. We are picking it up in 90 minutes. The Kahala store has a special opening time of 7 am this morning. I can't wait.

My wife also decided to get a Blackberry. So, we have one of each now. I loved my Blackberry when I had it when it first came out. I hope I don't regret that decision.

As long as the iPhone has tethering, I think all will be right with the world.

                            Jim,
Let me know how you like your new iphone. I'm also a BB user and thinking about switching to the new iphone.

AT&T isn't a good path to take regardless of hardware

As soon as the Sprint exclusive runs out on the fabulous new Palm Pre (year end) Verizon should pick that up. It is an iPhone killer not only for a much better and mature feature set but the support and quality of service (including tethering) that AT&T hasn't been able to offer as the exclusive iPhone source. Remember Verizon had first dibs on the iPhone and turned it down. While they may regret that - or they may not - AT&T was the decisive second choice by Apple due largely to reputation and lack of coverage where Verizon shines.

While the iPhone has its pluses being tied to only AT&T means I'll never have one until that changes AND only then if Palm is no longer a viable option.

iPhone doesn't have tethering but there are rumors about it for the next generation and when the AT&T contract is up. I just heard that Apple expects to sell 5 million of these phones in this quarter alone.

I like my iPhone but am not going to buy the new one yet. It was about time that they had video too which my old phone had already plus the cut and paste feature is finally available too.

I find the keyboard very exact so seldom misstype but if I do, I find it hard to make a correction. This I do not like.

I wonder why Jim is so against Microsoft and Apple too? I am always amazed as I don't think they are as bad as Wastegate.
