iPhone or Blackberry?

I went to www.palm.com and watched some demonstrations like here (very favorable) and others too but I am not the expert because I am only familiar with the iPhone and Motorola before that. I much preferred the Motorola over the Nokia phone but the iPhone is so much easier to use and has a large crystal sharp screen. All I can say is that I love the competition between these two or more companies so we get nicer toys to play or work with.

If the connection is that bad with AT&T back east then this is a reason not to buy the iPhone. Our connection used to be very bad but it was the same with all the cell phone companies in this area because we tried most of them. We live next to the U.S. Naval Weapons Station and Boeing with all their very large satellite dishes from the Space, Defense and Military Aircraft systems so our atomic clock will not even work at home.

Our cell phone quality became decent after the 3G was introduced and we got a tower close. You would think that the 3G is everywhere now and certainly in New York City. Have you looked at the AT&T Coverage Viewer? I can see that it is spotty in your area so the iPhone may not be the best phone for Avery or anyone who lives in that area but hopefully when the 4G is introduced, it may finally get better. I know that Avery would have liked the iPhone because she has the MacBook already but it is a phone primarily so that needs to work.

It's the old Cadilac vs Yugo tale

I just looked up the market share for the Palm OS. It commands a 0.9% market share of the smart phone market. It's going nowhere. It's only useful for a very small fringe community of users. Comparing Palm OS applications to Apple iPhone applications is like counting DOS applications in the windows discussion. You can throw them all out.

The Palm OS is the DAE of the smart phone world. A bit player that has a very small, but loyal following from the early days of the Palm Desktop which I dumped years ago.

If it every gets to 5%, I might take a look at it.

Palm / Treo virtually created the Smartphone. Yes, they have hit hard times the past year or so but there are millions sold & in use. As of last fall Apple was "an also ran" at less than 1% yet nearly overnight vaulted to 6%. The market is very volatile and "leaders" can change quickly. That Palm isn't selling in the top right now isn't all that important as they haven't had a new product until the Pre in over a year (a lifetime in electronics).

From Gartner:

Smartphones now represent 13 percent of the total mobile phone market, up from 11 percent last quarter, according to the report.

In the phone maker race Apple vaulted from an also-ran into the second spot behind Nokia, posting a whopping 523 percent growth from 1.1 million units shipped in the third quarter of 2007 to 6.9 million units shipped in the third quarter of 2008.


Despite being pushed into third place by Apple, RIM’s shipments grew more than 80 percent to 6 million units despite delays in rolling out the BlackBerry Bold.

With the Storm and the clamshell Pearl 8220 available in the fourth quarter, RIM could regain the second spot, the report said.

Nokia easily retained its top spot, but its share declined from 51.4 percent in the third quarter 2007 to 38.9 percent in the third quarter 2008. Nokia’s actual shipment numbers stayed relatively steady from 16 million units shipped in 2007 to 15.4 units in 2008.

If market share told the whole tale rather than quality / features then Nokia should be the top choice for iPhone user as well as Blackberry and Palm. If you've ever seen / used a Nokia you know they are cheap, thus getting a ton of sales, but not the same class as the others.

Again the real issue with iPhone, besides their touting of "new features' that aren't, is the AT&T tie. That system is too poor in coverage & service levels to allow the iPhone to be a real option for serious users. Add in that the phone part of the iPhone is by far it's weakest feature and you have a real problem for those that want a reliable phone as their first consideration. By the way the new Pre has a real multitasking OS. All the others (including iPhone)? Nope. Sorry. Behind the curve again. High or low % of market or not. Sorry. Maybe they can offer it as a new feature in 2014 if the past schedule holds true. And in between they can bring in tethering (at extra cost of course).

Enjoy your toy but I'll stick with a more reliable and productive brand and service, thank you.

I've had an Iphone for several months and I adore it! I have not had service issues with AT&T.

I love all the features and aps. I didn't think I would like it as much as I did! I sure am glad I finally broke down and got it . . . Now I don't know how I could live without it.

We used it on our last trip and it was really a valuable tool for us!

AT&T is much better in California (certainly LA, where I've used it) than it is in NYC. I also think AT&T service will end up costing me more, as I would need to pay for the data plan in addition to the texting plan and we''ve already got unlimited messaging on our Verizon family plan. I may take so long to make this decision that something new comes out in the meantime. Of course I caved in and resurrected an old phone, but the screen is very dark so txting is difficult...

I have been a very happy Verizon customer, but it would have cost over $100 for a data/text plan + a minimum 600 minutes with ZVW. I did consider AT&T but I have heard of their lousy customer service, so I went for a Blackberry 8900 with T-mobile.

At present Amazon has a sale where a Blackberry 8900 (with WiFi access too) available for $0.01, if you sign up for a 2 year plan. I chose that.

When I am at home all my phone calls and data go through my home WiFi. The BBerry doesn't have a zillion apps as with the iPhone, but I am very happy with the phone and the apps.

I still love my Nokia N85. I was able to leave the laptop home on our last vacation. The wi-fi and GPS functioned flawlessly, and the 5MP camera (w/flash) is more than adequate for most casual shots. The phone reception is outstanding, one area where Nokia owns the competition. I have been with AT&T for around 15 years, have owned Nokia phones exclusively, and I seldom, if ever, experience a dropped call.

I got my Blackberry Tour in Sept. and now I am getting a warranty replacement. The #&)^@& track ball doesn't work well, so I am getting a new unit. Now I have to copy all of my pictures to the new phone and remember where I downloaded the apps so I can download to the replacement phone. It is as bad as buying a new computer and loading all the software to the new one.

Are you sure you need to do all that? When I moved from an older BB to a new one, I just went into BB Desktop Mgr and backed up my old one. Went to the device switch wizard and then put synched my new BB and had everything.

The track ball issue is a constant thing with BBs. I have the new 9700 Bold which has the track pad and it is a huge difference with no issues.

Do I need both phones to do this, or can I start the sync with the old phone, pick up the new phone, and then complete the sync?

You should have both your old phone and new phone at the same time. (or least that what I've always done)

I was able to load from the old phone to the transfer program and unplug. I think went to the Verizon store where they spent time setting up a refirb BB. The first call I tried to make proved the phone didn't work, so back in the store and set up a second refirb phone. They loaded my contacts and I took the phone home.

I hooked it up to the computer and performed the second half of the tranfer process. It worked 95%. Some apps didn't function, so I will still need to reload them, but otherwise, it saved a lot of time and work.

I had a Motorola Droid..my first smartphone. Last weekend in Vegas it came to an untimely death in a sink at The Paris in Las Vegas . I went to Verizon and chose the Samsung Fascinate. I really like it. It is Droid technology so very similar to the Motorola. However it does not have a keyboard..which is good for me because I always used the on screen keyboard.
