  • Cell phone-less...

I have been sans cell phone since Saturday (10:12 pm, not that I'm keeping track). Trying to hold out until the new iPhone gets released on 6/19, but I probably won't realistically have one in hand until a few days after that. That means going commando for two weeks or more, I don't know if I can do it.

I know I used to manage just fine without one. 17 years ago. I could probably rummage around and come up with an old phone to connect in the meantime, but it's a pain, and I think it'll be interesting to see how I do without it for a while.

Have any of you who rely on a cell phone tried doing without for any length of time?

Just get a cheap Tracfone for two weeks. I can lend you one of ours!

The only problem with a temporary is that no one would know your number. Which, is some cases might be a good thing.

I think the longest I kind of went without was last summer when we were in Canada. I still had my cellphone, we were just trying to use them as little as possible.

But the painful thing is not being able to call other people. We went to the Cayman Islands AND Canada last summer! I was actually fine with people not being able to call me. But I really missed the phone when I had a sudden thought I needed to share with someone....

Yes, all of this is why I get so panicked about the thought of changing phones. I really, really need/want to upgrade my current phone to something that I can also use to store my contact data and calendar info so I don't have to carry a separate PDA. But, the thought of getting used to a new device is making me twitch.

I want a new phone, but I just got new business cards and the thought of trying to port my number with Tracfone is giving me the twitchies. Their customer service is the worst in the history of all mankind.

I'm not sure what being without a phone has to do with going without undies?

It feels similar to me... naked, vulnerable, but also a little naughty and free...

Ha. Not worth it. If I'm going to do that, I may as well resurrect one of the dead phones around here, then I could at least use my old number. Tonight I am meeting friends at the F train on 34th street. Had to have a plan ahead of time about where to meet, then a backup to proceed separately to our next destination if for some reason we don't meet up by 7:20. Tedious, but doable... So far the most annoying thing is when I go to pick up my kids, and they aren't outside waiting, still expecting me to call them from the car when I pull up.

Those meet-up things are the best thing about cell phones. When I think about all the connections I've missed in my life....

We were constantly missing people who we were supposed to be meeting for dinner!
