  • Moisture and Odor absorber?

Forgive my rare appearances the last week but I have been very busy battling Lake in my basement. Even though I have stayed on top of the situation with sump pump and dehumidifier I now have a nasty dank smell.

I remember hearing about a product in a jar or can that absorbed odors and wetness but can't remember what it is called. Anyone know what I'm talking about and can make a recommendation?

FWIW we are supposed to get another 2 inches between now and tomorrow.

We use Damp Rid in ou Florida condo during the summer. It's sold in plastic hanging pouches (that you discard, after water fills pouch), or as crystals that you provide the container. I prefer the hanging pouches, as they are so convenient. You can purchase at Walmart.

P.S. Holland, MI (near our summer condo) got around 7 inches last night. Everyone has water in basements, and many roads are washed out and impassible. I feel for you!!!

Do you have a dehumidifier, too? It would be a good idea to get one. I hear the crystals work well, but they don't pull out as much water as a dehumidifier.

Try putting Calcium Chloride in a jar, it should absorb moisture.

I used charcoal several years ago to get rid of the odour when the oil delivery man overfilled our oil tank. It helped to absorb the smell. Kitty litter will also help .

            Frank,

Where do you purchase Calcium Chloride? I believe that is the active ingredient of Damp Rid.

Some ice melting products have a high calcium chloride content. I would think a dehumidifier would be more efficient- tho dehumidifiers work better at higher temperatures. A small ionizer should take care of the odor and mold spores.
So far I've been pretty lucky (particularly while on trips) and only have had about 10 gallons in the basement- all of which has been contained.

Sherry I tried to get the Damp Rid at my local hardware store but when I explained to them that I was alternating the sump pump and dehumidifier ( I don't have a second heavy duty line down in my basement to run them both simultaneously) they suggested Odor Magnet. Said it had been used where there had been house fires successfully.

                Welcome to Natural Magic

Works wonders immediately with no cover up scent ( being allergic to many perfumes, etc. I love that fact ). I may invest in a few more for other areas in my house.

                    Silica crystals Crystal cat litter.

                    Lawren,

Go to BJ's and get a few buckets of the crystal cat litter. This is the silica gel that you find packaged with many items that you buy and see those little white packets that say "Do Not Eat". Those packages are used to absorb moisture.

Silica gel litter, a porous granular form of sodium silicate, has the highest absorbency of any litter, and has excellent moisture and odor control.

I'm going to try this, too. Thanks!

It is the main ingredient in damp rid and it is also ice melt. I find it to work well. as said Charcoal will remove odors as will baking soda.

At Bj's and Costco they sell 12lb bags of Baking Soda. I just got back from BJ's and I saw Damp Rid on the shelves as well.

Call me cynical, but I tend not to believe information at sites that sell an alternative product like the ones you listed. I have a $ 25 ionizer that removes odors very well.

Thanks for info, Lawren! I also use kitty litter and charcoal.
