Surely a simple "Please" or "Thank You" isn't too much to expect either from customer or sales staff. As far as I'm concerned it costs nothing but can mean a lot.
As to employee or customer holding a conversation on a mobile (cell) phone whilst being served - I think it's the height of rudeness. If my phone rings whilst I'm being served I let it ring. If the call was important the caller will have left a message, if it wasn't important I haven't missed anything.
