  • The Honolulu Marathon - I registered to run it today!

After my experience with the Hibiscus Half Marathon and getting to know lots of runners, I did what recently to me was the unthinkable. I registered to run the Honolulu Marathon this morning.

My training from last month has been going really well. And, I joined the Honolulu Marathon Clinic last week which is a group that meets every Sunday in Kapiolani Park at 7:30 am to train for the Marathon. This group has been in existence since 1974. Everyone who joins and finishes the marathon gets a staff shirt and the group gets bigger and bigger. There are well over 100 runners there every Sunday. The clinic is free and it always starts with a lesson with Dr. Jack Scaff offering his wisdom of the day. It usually starts around March and runners are divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced groups. Each group has 3-4 levels running various distances and paces. So, there is pretty much something for everyone who wants to participate. I am running with the beginner group.

Here is the website: Honolulu Marathon Clinic

Normally, I wouldn't post my intentions to do anything like this in case I decided I couldn't do it and had to drop out. Now, I am posting this to keep me in the game to run and finish the race. I've pretty much reached the point of no return and I've got to do this now. It's something I really really want to do.

At this time of the year, the beginner group is running about 25 miles per week. 6 miles on Tues. 9 miles on Thurs. 10 miles on Sunday. Next month it jumps up to 30 miles per week.

I ran 10.5 miles with this group last Sunday, 6 miles and Tuesday, 6 miles on Thursday and another 10.5 miles today. I'm about 2-3 miles behind their pace, but I hope to catch up in the next few weeks. I am also continuing to work with my trainer on Tues and Thurs and Suns as well. About half those sessions are rolling and stretching to keep my body in tip top condition to avoid injury. The other half is pretty intense endurance training with weights. Lower weights and lots of reps. Usually in the 75-150 range.

I feel pretty good about the training and if I stick to it, I should be able to finish hopefully under 7 hours. One woman I met ran the first 13 miles and walked the rest. It took her 9 hours and 15 minutes. That is a commitment to finish.

What is the best thing about running??? Eating!!!! In a 10 mile run, I burn 1200 calories. You get to eat a LOT to make up for those lost calories without any guilt. If you love to eat, then running is the best way to enjoy it without killing yourself.

Wish me luck. I'll post my training status over time to keep me motivated.

That must be an awesome place to run. I bet the scenery is motivating enough in itself. We'll be rooting for you back in FL.
