  • Do you have a regular exercise program?

We all are aware of the need for exercise as a major health benefit.

Since May I have been trying to keep to an exercise program that involves small weights, stretches, and certain yoga postures....but I admit there are days when I am less than enthusiastic about it.

What is your routine? How do you enjoy it rather than dread it?
Life is short, live it with this awareness.

6 days a week (though sometimes I have to miss it when work gets really busy):

25 minutes of some kind of aerobic activity (usually stairmaster/treadmill, but sometimes elliptical machine, sometimes stationary bike)
30-45 minutes of resistance exercise (combination of free weights and machines)
    5-10 minutes of stretching

I often will use the jaccuzzi as a post-exercise reward.

I enjoy exercising, usually using it as a period for meditation, though sometimes I will put on my iPod and listen to a book or music while doing it.

I will mix it up, going to different gyms or changing the exercises, to keep it from getting boring.

I am a true slug. Over the years I've tried jogging, joined gyms, but have found nothing that really inspires me. For the last few years my routine has been to get up early, do an exercise video, then get ready for work. My goal is to do this five mornings a week.

I used to when I was riding 5 or 6 days a week. I've pretty much been sitting on my butt for a year now dealing with injuries and recovery periods.

I do very much enjoy walking and I live in an area where my walks can be as varied as I want. Around the lake, along the Hudson River or some nicely marked hiking trails, even just a walk around the neighborhood. A third of my county is state parkland.

It has been a pretty miserable spring and summer for outdoor exercise though.

I better stop making excuses soon as I can feel the difference mentally as well as physically.

Nope. Unless lifting my wine glass each afternoon can be termed regular exercise.

I am pretty active 3 seasons of the year doing pretty rigorous work in my yard daily and going hiking with some buddies once or twice a week. During the winter I'm a couch potato. I take my bike & golf clubs when we take our 6 week timeshare snowbird trip but they sit and gather cobwebs while I read and do sudoku puzzles. My eyes and pencil holding fingers get exercise, though. And my jaw. We eat a lot.

Absolutely.....I walk to and from the frig at least 20 times a day! Sometimes, I even step up the pace, and I'm almost jogging.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Are you kidding me?.....That's a real work-out! I suggest that you improve your regiment by increasing the amount of wine you drink, and by drinking it much faster. Keep going until you can actually feel the burn in your arm muscles. Oh, and don't forget to switch hands. Your arms will be buff before you know it.

The only exercise I do is walking on my treadmill 1/2 hr 6 days a week. I used to exercise with Richard Simmons tapes but I can't do those any more.I just bought a Wii and I love the tennis and bowling. Maybe that will increase my exercise.

My GD asked me "Mommom, didn't you ever play tennis before"?

My exercise regimen is spin/cycle class. I wear a Polar heart rate monitor to measure my heart rate and calorie burn. Go to a class with about 40 stationary bikes. If the instructor plays good rhythmic party music I can burn about 750 calories in an hour. My goal is at least 600 calories. I sweat profusely, and drink about 1 liter of water during the routine It's like going to a real intense dance party. Try to go at least 2x per week.

Actually, I attempt to balance my routine by placing the cigarette in my right hand and the wine glass in the left and alternating lifts to my mouth. After 6 reps I switch hands and repeat.

I actually wonder about people who pay to go to a room in some building in a strip mall, dressed in stretchy unbecoming clothing and grunting and sweating in front of others. Why not save the money and do that in the privacy of your own home? Sort of like folks who pay money for tap water with a pretty waterfall on the label that is bottled at a big building in Modesto, Ca. right from the tap.

I am just kidding! I understand the motivation thing when one joins a gym. I did once and I went twice. But the bottled water thing just baffles me.

I try for 5-6 days per week but settle for 4-5 most of the time.
I belong to a local gym and although I love to use bike riding or walking as my exercise I find that belonging to the gym and going there keeps me on track better. I do fall off the wagon now and again but so far have been able to push myself to hop back on eventually each time.
I know I feel a lot better in general when I doing it regularly.

For one year I worked out at a gym with a personal trainer. I'm off the wagon and my next door neighbor & I are trying to work out cause we need to have more stamina when we go to Utah next month. shaggy
