  • I finally bought something I saw on an infomercial

My wife and I were eating a lot of fast food, mainly because most of our meat is frozen and by the time we decide what we want, the thought of thawing and then cooking was just too long when we get home from work and are hungry. Then I saw it:

It slices ... it dices; but wait! There's more!

What intriged me was the claim that you could cook food directly from the freezer. After buying two packages of the Omaha Steaks deal, I decided to give it a try.

Esentially it is a table top halogen light convection oven. Well it came yesterday and I gave it a whirl:
    • Omaha Steaks Au Gratin potato balls - 16 minutes for 4; done to perfection.
    • 1/2" 5 oz frozen hamburger patties - 15 minutes total for 4 (flip after 10 min for even browning); done, but next time I will use some liquid smoke seasoning.
    • Thawed 1.5 lb boneless pork roast - 20 minutes; done to perfection.
    • Chocolate Chip cookies - 6 minutes; I have to flatten the cookies when I put them on the baking pan (a work in progress).

We have a Farberware Open Hearth Rotisserie which I love dearly, but the thing is a bugger to clean and there is some grease spatter around the counter by the unit. There is no preheating and it uses less energy than firing up the oven without heating up the kitchen. It also browns the meat beautifully.

The Flavor Wave deluxe has 5 main pieces:
    • The oven head - not immersible
    • The polycarbonate dome - dishwasher safe
    • Two position rack - dishwasher safe
    • Glass Liner Pan and Serving Dish - dishwasher safe
    • Base - dishwasher safe

The Glass Liner Pan and rack take the brunt of the mess, but you can soak the drippings by just filling the dish with hot water. The Power head and the base don't really get dirty. The dishwasher safe pieces pretty much fill the dishwasher.

    Main Features:
    • Cooks with no added fats or oils.
    • Large cooking area accommodates over 8 pounds of meat
    • Glass pan makes for easy cleanup
    • Saves up to 85% more energy than conventional ovens.
    • Compact and lightweight - will fit on any countertop.
    • Smokeless, odorless and it won’t heat up your kitchen, dorm room or RV!

All in all, I'm pleased with it.

Cost: $130 with shipping and the bonus Le Presse which I haven’t tried yet.

I saw the ad on TV a few weeks ago but have not seen it again since then. It souded to good to be true but it sounds like from you that it does work.
I wonder if this is cooking with light why can't we just buy the bulbs and make our own cooker?

Yes it does work, you are not going to get an outdoor cooked taste. It's like using the broiler portion of your oven.

It is a specially shaped bulb that is not servicable by the owner. It is optimized for infra-red and has a thermostatic contol. Not really a do-it-yourself kind of system.

        thanks for "testimonial"

My daughter has mentioned this -- I am sending her your post. She, too, has to come home to "frozen" food sometimes.

I just purchased a G5-George Foreman-grill, and I guess I am going to stick with that (and our outdoor grill) for awhile.
        hope this info helps,

This sounds like a nice idea but, I usually use my slow cooker. I can put fronzen items in it, leave for the day, and come home to perfectly cooked food. I can't get grilled taste, of course, but then I can use cheap cuts of meat and they turn out perfectly tender.

For $30 for a slow cooker, it's a time saver and a bargain.

Might have to try this oven anyway.

New kitchen items seem to be an unending parade. I find that most of them end up stashed away somewhere and seldom get used, so I'm reluctant to try anything new. If it really grabs me, I feel I can wait for it to show up on the stores shelves with a discount or at least less the shipping and handling fee. I've got so much stuff stored away now that it's getting hard to find anything.
