I don't usually like going to the movies. There is little I find worth the time, and I hate the crowds and the loud sound system. And not being able to hit "pause." The last movie I saw in the theatre that I thought was worth it was A Beautiful Mind. And I did see the last Star Trek, but let's face it - great cinema it ain't.

But I made an exception for Avatar in 3D and it was such a great visual experience. We thought we had IMAX tickets, but they put us in a regular theatre with 3D (for $16/ticket, grrrrrr). I liked it so much we are going to see it in IMAX tomorrow ($19/ticket - unreal).

The writing isn't brilliant, but the animation, especially in 3D, is just fantastic!! Kind of like scuba diving.

I always say that. But this was recommended by too many like-minded friends so I caved. I was totally PO'd when we ended up in the Not IMAX.

The rest of the family saw it. Although they all said the visual effects were wonderful, they also agreed the story was kind of "ehhh". And none of them told me this was a must see for me. In fact, of the movies dh and I have seen recently, his ratings in order are:

The Men Who Stare at Goats
          Up in the Air
          Avatar

And, I'm not sure where he ranked Inglorious Basterds.

The story is the traditional "hero's journey," as outlined by Joseph Campbell. In my opinion, anytime that is the case, plot becomes of no importance. Avatar is worth seeing for the experience, much as you go to an amusement park for the experience.

I think I'll go to the amusement park instead.

I want to be the only person who can say they never saw Avatar.

Did anyone that has seen it, feel it had anti military expressions?
My husband, retired USAF refuses to see it with me as the rumor in that community is that if you are/were military, do not go see it.
I have no reference except you guys! I feel that visually it would be an experience, so I may have to go to a matinee by myself or with a friend....

He should probably stay home if he is concerned. It sure isn't pro-military... Maybe you should go first and screen it for him

If I remember correctly, all the "military action" was done by hired mercenaries. The corporation hired military types to provide security.

It is anti-military in the same way that any film glorifying Native Americans having conflict with the U.S. military forces is anti-military.

I've been to see it twice, firstly with my 20+ year old kids and then I dragged my wife along for what was "not her type of movie" I have to say she was blown away by it. I will be going back to see it a 3rd time before it leaves the Big Screen, 1.3 billion people, and counting, can't be wrong.

My daughters and their friends saw it at an IMAX theater. They said it was so good they want to go back and insist I go with them. I just hate paying the price for the IMAX theater, but I know it won't be the same on my tiny TV when it comes out on DVD.
