  • "Marley & Me" by John Grogan

If you have ever owned a Labrador Retriever, this is a book for you! If you are a dog lover..this is a book for you. Marley is a big, bumbling, slobbering, into everything, yellow Lab.

I had seen it on the best seller list for quite awhile, but finally saw the cover...'That's our Dakota AKA Kota' (our almost 15 mo.old yellow Lab) and bought it. It's a fast read and very funny, but have the Kleenex ready at the end. It also made our 'wild child' Kota seem like an angel, and she is far from that.

But, also in the book are a lot of good tips on raising dogs and how to pick the right one. (he didn't and we didn't ) And a lot of information on Labs. Pick it up for some good reading.

My 14 year old DD is reading this book right now and absolutely loves it! We don't have a lab but she plans on being a Vet and loves all animals. I will not clue her in on the ending though. Thanks for the heads up.

I wish I had thought to write a book like that. I could have with all the dogs I've owned. His is a compendium of all his experiences with his and others' dogs. It's not just about Marley...if there is a Marley.

Carol, I don't understand where you get the idea of this book being a 'compendium of all of his experiences with his and others dogs' or that there may not be a Marley. No where on the jacket or inside does it say that this is a 'compendium'. Yes, at the end he talks of the emails he received after they had to put Marley down, and these emails from people talked about the stories (and trials) with their dogs, but we got to follow Marley from puppy hood to adulthood. He does mention that his first dog, Shaun, set the standard by which he would judge all other dogs to come, and he may have had other dogs & he, Jenny & the kids live with 'Gracie' now, but I can believe there really was a Marley. We have a 15 month old female, yellow Lab that would have been a good match/companion for Marley...except everyone would have gone crazy. Her name is Dakota (born in South Dakota & comes from a litter of 13), but we call her "The Wild Child".
