  • Who are your favorite sci-fi/fantasy writers?

    Here are my favorites:

Dan Simmons - The Hyperion books were his best I think

Tad Williams - Otherland, War of the Flowers....

Neil Gaiman - Anansi Boys, Neverworld

Stephen R. Donaldson - Thomas Covenant Chronicles

    Always looking for more....

Terry Pratchett! I love him. And Diana Wynne Jones. They're both great.

I like Brin, too, but my library only has a couple.

I have read some Feist and Eddings, like them a lot. Will have to check out the others.

Asimov got me started with the Foundation series about 30 years ago...

I like a lot of Asimov s-f; his characters may not be complex, but his plots are tight and his prose is so clean.

I liked Heinlein's kid's stuff (particularly Have Space Suit -- Will Travel), except Podkayne, which I hated. I think the only adult Heinlein I liked was Door Into Summer. My best friend, mother and brother think his The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is a work of genius (I haven't read it ).

Quite liked Alan Dean Foster's story collections With Friends Like These... and Who Needs Enemies? but less enamored of his novels.

Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game and Herbert's Dune (which was way more impressive when I was 13) are both good, but I haven't read any of the sequels of either.

My fantasy reading is only slightly more current.

Barbara Hambly's Sun Wolf series (The Ladies of Mandrigyn; The Witches of Wenshar; The Dark Hand of Magic ) is pretty good, as are the first two Windrose books The Dark Tower and The Silicon Mage (which essentially form one long novel) - Dog Wizard is fine but not quite as good as the other two. Also like Those Who Hunt the Night, but fellow fans have recommended I avoid the sequel. Not much for Darwath or her Dragon series.

Hambly's Bride of the Rat God is Fu Manchu without the racism, pulps without the sexism, and Hollywood without gridlock (it's set in the 1920's). She plays it straight, meaning half her fans didn't get the joke. I think it's hilarious.

Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

Patricia A. McKillip's The Forgotten Beasts of Eld, which people seem to either love or hate -- the language is formal and rather stylized, and the theme rather heavy for fantasy.

The Last Unicorn - Peter S. Beagle is one of the few fantasy writers more influenced by James Thurber than by Tolkien.

My favorite fantasy writers are the speech writers for Presidents and Presidential candidates.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

Jeepers! I read that in 9th grade or so - many, many moons ago. I was, and still am, an avid reader. It was killing me to read Lord of the Flies and Catcher in the Rye a chapter a week when I was done the day the books were assigned. Thankfully my teacher understood so I went to gym class with my friends that period and only went to English on quiz/test days. But I was assigned several more books, like The Last Unicorn, to read for the semester and report on. Sweet deal for me!
