  • The American

Went to see The American, George Clooney in Italy, two of my favorite things. I read some of the reviews and knew it wasn't a Bourne action packed thriller. That being said, I actually enjoyed it and felt it was thought provoking.

We saw this last evening. I think it is an outstanding movie. If you like shoot em up with lots of noisy action, this movie is not for you. The American is the slow unraveling of a story and building of tension. Quite different from the "typical" thriller. Watch for the symbolism in the last scene.

This sounds like a movie dh and I might enjoy seeing together. And I love George Clooney, so watching him wouldn't bother me at all.

some things just didn't compute for me. I couldn't get an answer from my husband as he slept thru most of the movie. I will agree it was full of mounting tension and I guess the ending was inevitable, but I would sure like to have a couple of questions answered.

              spoiler alert

why would Pavel order the female asassin to kill "edwaurdo", kill her, then attempt to kill Edwaurdo himself. killing the female asassin makes no snese unless you intend to keep Edwaurdo alive.

                spoiler alert

My understanding is that Jack (Eduardo) booby trapped the gun (remember the scene where he opened the case before delivering the gun) so that the gun would backfire and kill the female assassain. He had made up his mind that this would be his last job. He suspected that Pavel would order him killed (which he apparently did). I believe Pavel came to make sure Jack was dead, and then he would kill the female assassin. This is my "take" on this. Pavel apparently wanted no survivors. Why? That is one of the unanswered questions of the movie. We don't know who Pavel is or what organization he and Jack worked for. CIA? Mafia? Foreign country? That is left to our imagaination.

okay, boobytrapping the gun makes sense, now the last scene made sense.

How many words of dialogue do you think Clooney spoke in the movie, 300 words?

It would be interesting to know. Maybe I'll see it again and count the words
