  • Do you enjoy fiction books about Hawaii?

I just finished Honolulu by Alan Brennert. It's a time piece following 4 picture brides and their lives from Korea to Oahu and spans about 60 years. I loved it.

I had previously read Molokai by the same author and enjoyed that very much as well.

I also enjoy Kiana Davenport's books...though I set aside Song of the Exile and then moved-so I need to go through some pretty big boxes to locate it-but I'm on a roll-so I think I'll do that. If you haven't read Shark Dialogues-this really is her premier piece. Start there.

I also enjoyed a really light read while on Oahu this past year called Aloha, Where you like go? About a woman who moves to the BI following her boyfriend and eventually lands in Oahu and drives a taxi. This one is a little graphic-but heartwarming never the less.

I also enjoyed the Chicken Soup for a Hawaiian Soul and the Glen Grant ghost stories...but to be honest-I almost did want to return to Oahu after reading some of the stories...talk about chicken skin.

Please add your favorite authors and books about the Hawaiian Islands.

    I need a fix.

Hawaii by James Michener. The beginning is a little slow, but it picks up fast. I love good historical fiction, and he takes through it all.

      Ditto.

My favorite genre is well researched historical fiction and Michener is king there if not the inventor. (Could have lived without the sub-oceanic volacanos creating the islands but it was his first of this type so I'll forgive him)

Not so guilty curling up with a great novel if I learn a few things while doing it.

I was trying to think of anything else I had read based in Hawaii and couldn't remember any.

Right, that's the part I was talking about. An easy "skim over" part, but the rest was great. I read it before I went to Hawaii the second time.

I have stared that book down at the library MANY times. I have even touched it...but never took it to the check out line. It has always intimidated me. 1000 plus pages! If you really think it's good-then I'll pick it up next time.

As an aside...I got my fix today. We have an Ono Hawaiian BBQ near me..guess what I had ? Plate lunch!

Must be time to plan another trip, eh?

Michner's Hawaii by all means. Yes, it's a slow at the beginning, but it picks up. BTW, his book on Alaska is another, had to go there after reading it...oh, and then there was Chesapeake, too. Made a trip there too...so DH could go goose hunting.

I really loved Shark Dialogues by Kiana Davenport.

I also liked Song of the Exile by the same author.

You can read about her, and these titles, here:

Very cool! I haven't read that one yet, and always intended to, so now that you mention it, I'll make it a point to read it soon.

I've lent out my copy of Shark Dialogues to friends planning their first trip to Hawaii, I think it gives so much history and understanding. I'm glad to meet another fan of hers!
