Personally, I would get whatever works with how you want to use it regardless of what someone else has. Not crazy to have different models in the family/household.

I got the Square Trade warranty because it was a lot cheaper.
There are many classics available for Kindle but HappyReaderJoyce and some others search free books and list them when available. Some you probably wouldn't want, but I've read a few that were enjoyable. To find them
Go to Amazon.com, Select Kindle on left hand side, then select ebooks, then Discussions. Scroll through the posts. I usally never go farther than pages 5 or 6. You need to pay attention as sometimes they aren't free anymore by the time you get to them. I try to check daily.

I have had a Nook Color for a couple of months now and I absolutely and totally love it!
The reading is wonderful, the color for magazines, etc is just amazing, and the choices of books is bountiful!
It makes a handy web browser as well, although you have to be near a wifi spot to do that (not like a cell phone with a data plan).
My daughter-in-law just bought a Kindle and we compared toys last weekend - I think the Nook comes way ahead.

I got my Kindle for Christmas and have downloaded over 100 free books. I have read more, yet spent less for books than I did before the kindle. I only have 8 "classics" (Mark Twain, Jane Austen, etc) all the rest have been found from the threads on the kindle discussion board at Amazon that Nancy referred to.
Pat, if you are going to get a reader for both you and Tom, I think you should stick with a kindle so you can share books on one account. If you can't do that with a nook, that would be a big deal breaker for me. That and the one I saw when reading outside was not as clear for reading as the eink on the kindle. I think when amazon can get a good, clear color eink to look as nice as the current kindle3, they'll release a color one.
Hope this helps.Vicki

Thanks everyone - I decided to go with the Kindle Wi-Fi 3G for me and Wi-Fi for DH.

The email, internet capability of the Nook is interesting to me as my phone doesn't have that (basic phone is all I wanted)... if the wifi connect is decent, does the Nook function pretty rapidly?
It is not as good as Kindle as a reader (so I have heard) a bit awkward - not good in bright sunlight.

The Amazon Kindle team says:
We are excited to announce that a new feature, Kindle Library Lending, will be coming later this year. Kindle customers will be able to borrow Kindle books from over 11,000 public libraries in the United States.
Kindle Library Lending will provide the same unique features customers love about Kindle and Kindle books, including the ability to read on any Kindle or free Kindle app, Whispersync technology that synchronizes your notes, highlights and last page read, real page numbers, and more. After a library book expires, if you ever decide to check it out again or purchase it from Amazon, all of your annotations and bookmarks will be preserved.
We are partnering with OverDrive, the leading provider of digital solutions to libraries, to bring a seamless library borrowing experience to Kindle. We will announce more information on Kindle Library Lending later this year.
Thank you for being a customer.
