Phoenix area Libraries now have Kindle Lending

On Tuesday, I went to the local library and renewed my library card in anticipation of being able to download library books to my Kindle soon. The gal said that while several ebooks already used OverDrive, ebooks for Kindle were not available yet. She said it should be coming soon, but did not know when. Friday, I heard an ad on the radio that you could now download library books to Kindles.

So, I downloaded a book from my local library last night. It will take a while to learn the system that our library uses to find the books I want, but was able to download one quickly & easily. Many of the books that I wanted were not available because all the copies were already checked out. I put one on hold for when it is available and they will send me an email when I can download it. My library lets you checkout a total of 10 books at a time and you keep them for 2 weeks. That should help with vacation reading.

The Kindle site has information and does say that you have to download with WIFI, not 3G - works for me as I have the WIFI version. It also loaded to my computer just like purchased books do.

So, check your local library website.

I got the original Kindle about 3 years ago and I love it now more than ever. I have the black leather-like case on it.

For me it doesn't completely replace "bound" books, since there are some books I want to read and make notes in with a pencil or pen. I like the ipad for some things, but I don't enjoy the slippery feel, shiny screen, and heaviness of the ipad for reading books. (We have the ipad1 & 2) The backlighting makes my eyes tired.

The Kindle feels like reading a book and it is the perfect size to stay in my purse all the time, so "my book" is always handy. I put it in a gallon ziplok bag to take it to the pool or the beach - you can see through it & turn pages just fine. No problems reading in the sunshine!

I'm sure DD will love it!

I just "checked out" two books for 14 days....so interesting that it brings you from the library page to Amazon....This is open to all library members of Suffolk County, NY.

My 14 yr old grandson got a kindle for his birthday (don't know which version) and told me he wanted the leather case with the light from -amazon because the light on the cover doesn't draw power from the kindle. He loves it.

Almost everyone on the plane from Cal. Was reading from an ebook device. The small size compared to the iPad seems to make it easier to carry.

It sure doesn't take new technology long to catch on.

My birthday is in a few days and with the Kindle now being library compatible, that's my gift. We actually went to a few different stores looking for the base model but no one had it! Ended up getting the 3G + WoFi + audio version at Walmart and the black case with light. But when I got home I found that Amazon had both pieces for less than the Walmart ereader alone. So I ordered and will get the Kindle and cover sometime next week. It'll miss my birthday but I am ok with that to save over $50! I have 15 days to retrun the Walmart Kindle.

My DH had also talked to our library and yes, they too said it sends you off to Amazon to do the actual downloading of the library book. Kinda weird but if it works, it's ok. I was able to check out ebooks for 21 days using the borrowed Nook. I hope I can with the Kindle too. 14 days can be too short when traveling.

Very excited and looking forward to the Kindle (as I hated the Nook!).

I just ordered a Kindle too!!! The price was good and I was excited that our town library offers the books for Kindle.

              Enjoy

If you are traveling, you can still download your book - if you don't have free wi-fi, you can always attach your kindle to your computer and do it that way.

I have a new Kindle question.

Younger dd now wants a Kindle. I see that the 3G version is available for $189, or the same version with "Special Offers" for $139. The difference seems to be that on the "Special Offers" Kindle ads will pop up when the screen saver is on (not while you are reading). It seems worth it to me to save $50, then we could get her the nice cover she wants as well. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Actually there seems to be better, newer ones now Luanne.
I can pick up the Internet for free with the 3G both in Bermuda and now the Bahamas. California is in America so that does not count.....
Anyway, what does the 3G with the touch screen costs because the Kindle would be sooooo much better with a touch screen.
The problem with the Kindle with the keypad is that u have to remember a wholwe lot of command stuff to make it easily work - touch screen would be sooooo much easier.
I agree that the paid screensaver would not bother me at all.

They do have a touch screen for the same price. But I just double checked dd's wish list and she is showing the keypad version. So, I'll ask her if that is what she really wants.

I checked out library books a day or so ahead of my Kindle arrivng in the mail - that was cool! I did find that I could change the check out loan period to 21 days too.

I really like the Kindle so far. It feels like a more quality machine than the borrowed Nook I had. I think that the borrowed Nook, having been a free give away, may have been a 2nd or something. It had so many issues.

I am getting some screen glare though and I wans't expecting that.

As I am reading all of the posts...Is a Kindle able to go online to view email? Can I look at a website like TSF??

                          Thank you
