  • Kindle Categories - how do you group your books?

Thanks to the Amazon Kindle discussion board and Free & Bargain Kindle Books | Pixel of Ink I have 60 free and almost-free books on my Kindle.

I know I can 'group' these books by category on my Kindle but I am looking for suggestions of what to name my books.

    Such as....

    Fiction, mystery

    Fiction, romance

    Fiction, drama

    Non-Fiction, self help

    Non-fiction, Travel

    Non-fiction, biography

    Husband's Stuff

Books I have Read - fiction
    Books I have Read - non-fiction.

How do you classify your books?

I have a four authors who I have series of books by, or several different books, and I have many Harlequin Romance bundles. I also have humor and jokes, and non-fiction, so I have:

    Author #1
    Author #2
    Author #3
Author #4 & #5 (both similar, chick lit)
    Harlequin Bundles
    Funny
    Non-Fiction

If I had a lot of self-help titles, etc., I'd make a topic for them, too.

I don't categorize the rest. Not everything is one size fits all with me.

Like Fern, I also have several author categories, a Classics and then a Misc, but that one needs to be edited as it is getting long and kind of jumbled. I like GrayFal's Fiction - mystery, romance, non-fiction, etc idea. That could help clean up that Misc category.

I think I will set up a Library category for when that is available and now that two of my best friends have just gotten Kindles and we can share books, a Borrowed category would be good. I know that the library and borrowed ones have a time limit, so would read those first when on an extended vacation before reading my purchased ones.

I've just started thinking about this too.

I still read new books from the library, and do not plan to purchase anything but "free" books. Most of these are the classics, things published before
1923. They are nicely alphabetized by author, but starting to get a little unwieldy now that I have 95 titles, and 10 pages of books.

        So far, I"m thinking :

Classics - and further subdivided into British, American, Russian authors.

Also have categories for business, and games. That's it so far.

I sort mine in collections mostly by genre: historical fiction, mystery/suspense, sci-fi/fantasy, romance, contemporay fiction, classics, non-fiction, games. If I have any series that contain more than 3-4 books, I give them their own collection. Right now I have 10 collections which just fit on the first page so it works pretty well. But with all of the free books lately, 2 of my collections are almost at 100 books! I won't run out any time soon!

And a new most important category::::

              TRAVEL )

So far I"ve got 2 guidebooks and a 25 language phrasebook to go in that one.

Oh - Just saw Pat has that one already (of course).

TWO guidebooks? I only have one. Did you pay 99 cents for the Mobi Paris Guide?

I've been thinking about travel books. The advantage, of course, is not having the weight of travel books in the suitcase. I'm concerned, though, about ease of use. Do you find them easy to navigate?

Now Pat I've told you I will not pay. Not even 99 cents lol.

No, the other guidebook is the most helpful 1936 Fodors ) found in the daily free link.

And to answer PSStreet, haven't looked at the guides yet - not traveling to those locations in the near future. So many books, so little time. Right now I"m just collecting them like a hoarder. But I would think they'd be just as easy to look into as a 'real' book, and without the weight.

I was just noticing on "Pixel of Ink" that they have similar classifications - I think I will use some of them as well.

OOps, I have that Fodor's, too!

I have not checked out the travel books yet either....but there is a series of "Mobi Guides" - the same as the free 25 language phrase book - for major European cities....I am going to see if theyhave a 'free preview' to check them out.

I am quoting myself - who does that remind you of

I downloaded this book as a free preview...
Amazon.com: Paris Sights 2011: a travel guide to the top 45 attractions in Paris, France (Mobi Sights)

                        as well as
Amazon.com: London Sights 2011: a travel guide to the top sixty attractions in London, England, UK. Includes four walking tours. (Mobi Sights) eBook: MobileReference: Kindle Store

and Amazon.com: Barcelona Sights 2011: a travel guide to the top fifty attractions in Barcelona, Spain (Mobi Sights) eBook: MobileReference: Kindle Store

And found them easy to use/read with maps and illustrations easy to see. I have to better learn how to navigate around the Kindle itself - commands and such - but I would definitely purchase ($0.99!) these guides - they have a more detailed version of the Paris book

Amazon.com: Travel Paris, France 2011 - Illustrated Guide, Phrasebook & Maps. (Mobi Travel) eBook: MobileReference: Kindle Store for $3.99 but for that much detail/home research - I prefer a traditional book with color pictures as I use them as my "photo album" after a trip.

So THANKS to all your input, I decided on the following categories...

Books I am Reading (this one will almost always stay at the top of the homepage)
                            Non Fiction-Self Improvement, Cooking
                            Non Fiction-Bio,Business,Adventure
                            Mystery, Suspense, Thriller
                            Contemporary Fiction
                            Historic Fiction
                            Short Stories
                            Travel
                            Classics
                            Games
                            Books I have Read

That is 11 - I might combine Travel into "Non Fiction-Self, Cooking, Travel"

I like having the short stories separate - there seems to be a lot of them as freebies and when u r just looking for a quick read, these are fun to have. When I am able to get Library books, they will be put in "Books I am reading" so they are always on top. When I am traveling, the appropriate travel books will be moved into the "I am reading" category.....the "I have read" category will probably be for books I liked and want to lend???? if I think something is just 'so-so' I will archive it.
                            Pat
