  • New Kindle question

I tagged this on to the existing Kindle thread, but thought maybe I'd better start a new thread with my new question.

Younger dd now wants a Kindle. I see that the 3G version is available for $189, or the same version with "Special Offers" for $139. The difference seems to be that on the "Special Offers" Kindle ads will pop up when the screen saver is on (not while you are reading). It seems worth it to me to save $50, then we could get her the nice cover she wants as well. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

The $139 on is great for reading? I have a kindle and a nook and love them. If you decide on the more expensive one look at the Kindle Fire. It costs $199 and is a tablet computer as well.

I don't think dd wants all the bells and whistles of the Kindle Fire. She put the one she wanted on her Amazon Wish List.

The $189 and $139 are the same 3G Kindle. It's just that the $139 model has ads that come up when the screen saver is on.

There is another model that is also $139, but that's a different one.

I'd probably get the 139 one. I got the one without 3g and now wish I'd gotten 3g. I will probably get the Fire.

I just did this same decision point. I got the $139 Special Offer one. I've been using it for the past few days. So far so good! I do not care what my screensaver looks like so saving the $50 was worth it to me.

I also bought the cover with light off of Amazon.com for $50. I like that the cover I chose is not black Cover was sold as like new and it was - mint!

I bought both the Kindle and the cover for less than what WalMart wanted for just the Kindle.

Anyway, what does the 3G with the touch screen costs because the Kindle would be sooooo much better with a touch screen.
The problem with the Kindle with the keypad is that u have to remember a wholwe lot of command stuff to make it easily work - touch screen would be sooooo much easier.
I agree that the paid screensaver would not bother me at all.

I answered on the other thread....but the one thing that would make my Kindle FABULOUS would be a touch screen - it would be so much easier to maneuver around and find what you want.

I am sorry that I purchased two of the keyboard ones because if I only had one I would let DH keep the old one and get the touchscreen for myself. :roll eyes:

I wonder if I could sell my "old" one somewhere online so I could upgrade to the new one????
            Suggestions anyone? Ebay maybe??? Craigslist???

I checked with dd. She wants the one with the keyboard. First, because she doesn't really like touch screen and thinks the screen would get "dirty". Second, because it's brand new and may have some bugs.

I'm hoping that maybe the keyboard model will go down in price once the touch screen comes out. So I will probably wait to order until then.

Dcwojo, how do you like the Fire? I'm thinking about it. My technically savy daughter says there are lots of aps for it and that, of course, there will be more. We were planning to try to get an HP touchscreen if/when they are available again, but she says there aren't enough aps for it--and of course, there will never be any more. Any thoughts on that?

I ordered one and am waiting for the fire to arrive. It is for my niece at school she keeps borrowing her roommates. She gets her textbooks on hers and likes having the tablet for research. I have use my 3g kindle daily and love it.

My husband and I both have 3G Kindles and love them. I'm just wondering if the Fire will be fast enough not to be annoying. Certainly, it's going to be a good price, and it may well force some of the others down in price.

                          I just got the $149 version Kindle - wifi/3G/keypad
I'm loving it - the only thing that I would want added to it would be lighting so that it could be used at night (without a lamp)

I agree about the lighting. My husband got the "paper back book size" and he has the cover that has a light built in. It is truly nice to use. Unfortunately, the larger size doesn't have a cover with a light.

I like my lighted leather cover but if I am reading outdoors or in the daytime, I tend to take the cover off as the Kindle alone is so darn lightweight.
                              I love my Kindle.
