  • So what new movies did you love?

I don't usually go to the movies, but after seeing American Hustle and Wolf of Wall Street in one week, I'm on a roll and thinking about seeing a few more things before they come out On Demand.

Have you seen anything really great?

I'd like to see Dallas Buyer's Club (Matthew McConaughey), though could prob wait for that on demand. I am also curious about the new Spike Jonze movie, "Her."

ETA: I highly recommend American Hustle - fabulous!

    Also loved "American Hustle".

Only other movies I've seen recently were "Catching Fire" (I'd read all three books and younger dd wanted to see it) and the second Hobbit movie.

I think I'd still like to see "Philomena" with Judi Dench and possible "August: Osage County". In watching the previews at the last movie we saw I think I'd also like to see "Monument Men" when that comes out (George Clooney, Matt Damon and others) and one about Cesar Chavez.

I highly recommend "Saving Mr. Banks". Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson were fantastic, and it was a great story.

I heard extremely mixed reviews on this. It was one that both dds wanted to see, until they started reading the reviews.

My tastes tend to line up w/ the ratings on rottentomatoes.com, and it got an 81% there. The only negative for me was that it was a bit too "Disney" at times, but it is not a kid's movie (although very family friendly). It was a total surprise on how much I enjoyed the movie. I wouldn't be surprised to see Tom Hanks and/or Emma Thompson nominated for a Oscar for their roles. Paul Giamatti also does a great performance.

I agree, Rotten Tomatoes rating is usually a good indicator. However, they frequently fail on me for foreign movies. I feel reviewers try to encourage foreign movies, that's why.

That reminds me.... I have been curious about Blue is the Warmest Color (90% on RT)... but I don't think I can handle three hours of subtitles.

eta: Rotten Tomatoes rates Her and Dallas Buyers Club over 90%!

Luanne, Philomena also rates high at 92%. I saw the play of August: Osage County - I don't think I could bear the movie, Rotten Tomatoes agrees (62%)!

I hardly ever go the movies...but I'm in for Dallas Buyers Club, Philomena and I think I have to wait for DVD release on Blue Jasmine. I certainly do not live in a cultural mecca and thus, it requires seeking out where the movies are playing and how long it will take me to get there. I REALLY want to see Philomena so I think DD and I might make the trek.

Best movie this year for me by far was THE BOOK THIEF. Kept my interest from start to finish.

We enjoyed both "Philomena" and "The Book Thief." Having read "The Book Thief," I wondered if it would be a good adaptation, and it was.
