Bo Derek on "10" Movie & Filming Nude Scenes: Tonight Show with Johnny Carson

For some stupid reason I found this clip intriguing.

It's got a lot of elements. There's clearly some awkwardness about the contents of the interview. The two of them clearly did not "hit it off" during the interview, but it's fascinating to see how Carson navigates through that and gets Bo Derek, at times, to talk openly and frankly, while at the same time keeping the whole thing working together as a television program. I think the keys are that Carson doesn't pretend that the sexual component doesn't exist, but after acknowledging that, he's able to set that aside and ask questions that lead her to respond as a person and not merely as the sex object that she was characterized as at the time. Looking at the clip I get a sense that "connection" enabled her to open up more than she had probably intended.

And I think that's at the core of what made Carson so successful. Although people coming on the program knew (or should have known) that their presence was entertainment and would be played that way, behind that there was a sense of respect and implicit understanding that while they might be played, they wouldn't be humiliated. What a contrast to so much current programming, where often the sense seems to be that if you haven't humiliated someone when you had the chance, you haven't done your job.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

    “You shouldn't wear that body.”

Yes and yes. I also notice that he kind of calls on the audience to do the same -- at the beginning, "I think it's safe for her to come out" is like a good leader doing one of those speeches that include the phrase, "I know you can be trusted." It's a respectful reminder that there is a line that people can cross, and he wants them to stay on the correct side of it. Later he defends her from the audience, again affirms the line he wants them to hold.

It's also amazing how much her body language changes in those few minutes. Carson's clearly distressed at her demeanor when she comes out, and rightfully so. But by the end of that clip, she's so relaxed she unclenches her hands, not just to gesture very tightly in her chest, but to touch him! Carson truly was a genius.

That's a good thing Frank. When you get older you won't even remember seeing it live, even though you saw it live. And then it will be... Bo Derek who?

She really was incredibly beautiful. And she is a striking lady to this day. Still hate her 10 hairstyle, though.

              Yes. She has aged well.

And in total and complete seriousness, when I saw Bo Derek in Ten, I had flashbacks to October of 1973 when I first laid eyes on my wife. We're celebrating our 40th anniversary in a couple of months.

Here is the best photo I have ever taken in my life, of her and our daughter, taken at DD's wedding in St. Maarten six years ago. I think she has aged every bit as graciously as Bo Derek, if not more so. One of my daily reminders is to take a step back, think of her, and realize how much I have been blessed.

IMO she was a 10 then but she is not a 9.5 now. Woman who are a 10 then and now are IMO Jacqueline Smith, Sophia Lauren, Raquel Welch, and of course my wife

Well, Spinal Tap was inspired by my wife, because Katia is an 11.

                      Like Mother, like Daughter.

Talking to SIL one time, I realized that he was totally smitten by DD when he first met her in the Chem Labs at USC in almost exactly the same way that I was by her mother when I chanced into her in a Halloween party in 1973 that neither of us had planned to attend.
