    Try Stacey Kent here http://www.staceykent.com/default.asp

She's an American who went to England a few years ago to study. She entered a singing audition/contest and won. She has been voted the top jazz vocalist in Great Britain for the last 5 or 6 years.

As for Linda Ronstadt check out "When You Wish Upon A Star". The last note of the song is as pure a note as you will ever hear sung.

What about some old motown such as Martha Reeves & the Vandellas or the Shirelles? Country you could do old Dolly Partin (applejack, coat of many colors) Also Loretta Lynn & Tammy Wynette) shaggy

Just some ideas off the top of my head.

Maria Muldaur--don't know the name of the song but it includes the line "Don't you feel my thigh, cause if you feel my thigh, you'll want to go up high...." Okay, that sounds better coming from Maria.

Julie Andrews--I Could Have Danced All Night (from My Fair Lady)
Gertrude Lawrence--Something Wonderful (from The King and I)

Patti Smith--my husband loves Patti Smith, but he's not here to make suggestions right now!

Diana Krall--can't think of anything right now, but she's good

Joan Morris--there's a recording of her singing Love's Old Sweet Song that is beautiful. It's from this album. http://www.amazon.com/After-Ball-plu...e=UTF8&s=music

Judy Garland--how could you forget her? Get Happy.

Barbra Streisand--okay, I don't care for her work much, but you have to admit she sings the heck out of things.

I'm not the Janis Joplin fan my husband is. My two favorites are "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Mercedes Benz." I found them on a triple disk album called "Janis."

Also, Santa. "Santana Live" - Forever Gold
          Is it vacation time yet?

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm getting close to buttoning things up. I'ts been fun to explore around and grab new items.

After I get it completed I'll post some more info. Right now I've got almost 11 hours worth of selections in the playlist. After I decide I finish reviewing the last items I want to look, I'll start winnowing things down to one CD length.

It's been fun finding one item, then jumping to simiilar items recommended by people who liked that selection. Following that process you can uncover lots of stuff you like that you would never find otherwise.

Doing that I also hit several lists of favorite female artists compiled by some people with compatible tastes. I found a bunch of great selections in those lists.

wackymother: that's from "Don't You Feel My Leg", off the Louisiana Love Call album. I do have a couple of tracks flagged from that album - don't know if they'll make the final cut.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

              “You shouldn't wear that body.”

Well I think I caught the Downtown bug again. Since I posted this I have played it like I was a kid gain. I would say I have heard it 2 dozen times today. My wife is going around singing Downtown as well.

Ok, I have a couple that may be a little off the wall, but I love them.

Idina Menzel- Defying Gravity. This is from Wicked, for which she won a Tony, incredible vocals.

Dale Ann Bradley-Run Rufus Run or Rita Mae. She is one of the few female bluegrass artist, highly acclaimed. Saw her at Grand Old Opry, wow. (This album comes out Oct. 10th.)

Alannah Myles- Black Velvet. Yes, I'm sure it a remake, but she does a bang-up job of it.

Tracy Chapman- Cold Feet. A bit of a strange song, but it is one of my favorites from her.

Stevie Nicks- Leather and Lace. Or anything else for that matter.

Aretha Franklin- anything. I assume, though, that she falls into the R&B category.

As you can see, I have a wide variety of musical favorites.

Did somebody suggest Crazy, the Patsy Cline version? How about Jo Stafford and You Belong to Me? Let's see, how schmaltzy can I get? At Last by Etta James? (Apparently that is far and away the biggest wedding song.) The Andrews Sisters? Bette Midler? Oh!!!! BLOSSOM DEARIE!!!

Eartha Kitt. Tiny Tim (he's kind of girly). Nancy Sinatra. Barbara Cook.

FYI - the list of artists I've culled from so far is below. This is pretty close to complete. In most cases I've got multiple selections from the same artist, and I need to winnow the selections down to more manageable numbers to fit onto one CD. Some artists will certainly be represented more than once.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions. I hope no one is offended if I've left off some of your suggested favorites. A couple of factors are at play here.

First is that I'm making judgements about whether or not it's something that both I and my kids might like. Gotta fit both of those criteria. In addition, sometimes a suggestion led me to a similar artist. For example, the Diana Krall suggestion led me to Diane Schuur. I had overlooked Diane Schuur (I know I mentioned her in my initial post, but then I overlooked her as I was assembling material until Krall was mentioned) - I've always enjoyed Schuur more than Krall. (For those who know Diane Schuur, her duet with Ray Charles of It Had to be You is almost certain to make the final cut. And for those who don't know that piece, I really suggest you locate it and check it out. Plus it has the little added fillip of two blind jazz singers in full voice doing a live duet.)

Second is that, as I mentioned previously, I'm trying to put in stuff that I think my kids will not be familiar with. So while many suggestions are excellent suggestions, they're pieces that they probably already know. For example, Etta James' rendition of At Last is excellent - one of my absolute favorites songs - but my kids also know it well. Fortunately, Etta James is so good and has such an extenisve discography that I can pull something else of hers out of my collection that they probably don't know - that will make them say "Wow" again. Aretha is a family favorite - there's very little that she's done that would be fresh for them. Chrissie Hynde is tough for the same reason, but I think I've got something from the Pretenders that they won't know. KT Tunstall might get pulled for the same reason. At the time I started this little project, KT was largely unknown. But in the last month she's suddenly started getting huge playtime.

                        Steve,

This looks like a great list. I don't know how much of it is available on iTunes, but they have a feature that allows you to submit a compilation, and you get a small piece (probably in iTunes credit) every time someone buys it...

I'd bet that most people (like me) tend to use the compilations only for reference and just pick a few songs, but it's still neat to have your list available,...

After I get it put together, I'll post the final list.

                          A few more recent additions:
                          • Adrienne Young
                          • Earth Kitt (Eartha derived from the Edith Piaf suggestions in a kind of weird way)
                          • Erin McKeown
                          • Sarah Pillow
                          • Po' Girl

                          ****

I'm also thinking about making it availale to interested TS4mers. It'll probably be about 500 - 600 MB of mp3s. Interested people would send me a stamped, self-addressed CD mailer. I might also do a "Best of" as an audio CD - that would probably a bit over one hour of music.

Any interest in that out there??
