  • Jake Shimabukuro

The other thread on Christmas Music and Hawaiian versions of it reminded me of an extraordinary Hawaiian musician that I encountered a little over a year ago. The musician's name is Jake Shimabukuro.

Who is Jake Shimabukuro? Well, he is simply the finest musician I've seen come out of the state of Hawaii. What instrument does he play?.... The ukulele..... That's right, the ukulele.

My wife picked up some tickets to see Jake at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. She told me prior to the concert that Jake was a local boy in Hawaii who played the ukulele and that she had wanted to see him for a while. I rolled my eyes and went along thinking that I would hear a modern rendition of Don Ho's Tiny Bubbles. I expected a lot of Hawaiiana music coming from a twangy hawaiian banjo. Boy, was I in for an unbelieveable surprise.

Jake Shimabukuro has done for the ukulele what Jesus did to water. He has the best range of a string instrumentalist I have ever seen. He can make that 4 string instrument sound like just about anything. He played ballads like "Somewhere over the Rainbow" that would bring tears to your eyes. He played Flamenco with the speed of any Spanish Virtuoso. He played the violin solo to a Puccini piece that rivals any player I've ever seen. And, he plays Jazz, Rock, Brazilian Samba and more.

Jake is playing a concert today in Honolulu. I would go, but my priority is the USC-Notre Dame game.

Here is his website and a sampling of what he can do. Listen to the 3rd and last video of the home page of this website and it will give you an idea of his talent. Jake's Website. Click around and listen to his rendition of "Spain".

    Amazing. Simply Amazing.

We are huge fans of Jake. My husband is a local Ewa boy who grew up playing the uke. We are huge fans, also, of all Hawaiian music from the Makaha Sons of Niihau, to Iz, Gabby Pahanui, Cecilio & Kapono (from my time living there), Emma, the Beamers and all slack key.

Late edit: I am buying tickets for the Sunrise, Fl. concert on March 9th. That'll coincide with my annual need for winter sunshine and warmth. Thanks for the headsup. I got the info from his website.

Jim.....I just listened to him, and I loved it. I am going to get his latest album 'Gently Weeps'.....Also, it sounded to me like the perfect music to include when I entertain.

Thank you.....This is so much fun. I love being turned on to new music.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

        Angela,
Then you might want to listen to Iz, too. Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo`ole's
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Hawaii kine version has been very popular over the last few years. You've heard it on commercials and on E/R when Dr.Greene passed away.

Beags......"IZ" passed away at age 38?

I went searching the net to see if I could hear a sample of his music somewhere, and I read that he had died.

I'm still looking to see what I can find.

Yes, very tragic. He was a very large man and no disrespect here, morbidly obese.
Angela, I think I still have your address from the time you went to Aruba. I'll send you a CD. We have duplicates (given as gifts to us which we can't use).

Hey, what a day, eh ? You, BB and me agreeing on something.

A day that will live in infamy.....

Beags.....Thank you so much, that would be great. Maybe I can send you a disc, also? We can trade some music.

What type of music do you enjoy listening to?
