  • Dog Parties

There is a new book out by Kimberly Schlegel....Dog Parties. Yes, this is the new thing. People are now giving their dogs all sorts of parties. Birthday parties, Halloween parties, Bark Mitzvahs, etc.........

One of the designers that I work for gave his dog a Birthday Party when he turned 90. I was invited, and went with a gift for the dog. There were about 10 other dogs, and their owners at the party. They had a big doggie cake, and other goodies made by some company that specializes in doggie treats. of course, the dogs were given a 'doggie bag' to take home with them.

Oh yeah, this same dog died a year or so later, and he was waked, coffin and all. Again, I went, this time with flowers. The dog is now buried in Brookville, with a marble headstone.......New York designers, totally normal people.

I've heard of 'doggie' showers .... and our Red Hat group gave one for a gal in the group who got a new pup. There were no dogs though (the party was in a small mobile home), but we had fun watching her open up the various gifts for her pooch.

As for Pet Cemetaries...there was not too far from where we lived in SW Ohio. A friend took me over there to show me raspberry bushes and I got to looking at some of the pet graves. Some had just small headstones, some had huge ones, complete with pictures of the pet. Many had flowers or some sort of figurine. There was one that had a marble arch that must have been 10 feet tall and had some benches around it. The one I really liked though...or should say two...was a man's bronze headstone with a hunter and a dog on it. Next to it was the dog's headstone. Nice tribute to a hunter and his best buddy. I believe the man's ashes were there. I told DH I would get one like that for him.

Well, Ang, I have never attended a doggie party, but I must admit I do attend a doggie playgroup with my Pug, Simeon.

Once a month, a group of us Pug owners gather at the local doggie park. (www.meetup.com)

And, I am not a dog lover -- this dog is a "gift" from my daughter. When hubby and I retired, dear daughter read that "old" people need a dog for companionship -- it helps keeps "old" people young. (???????????????)
      hope this info helps,

I read that, too. They say that owning a pet keeps your blood pressure down, and puts you in better spirits.

Well, if you want, now you can have themes for your play dates. If it's Halloween, you can dress your dog up in a costume, and bring little goodie bags for the other dogs. Or, have birthday parties, for the dogs, and give out bones, and doggie treats........It's the 'chic' thing to do, you know.

A doggie shower........I love it. I could just see the look on some of my friends faces if they were to receive an invitation to a 'doggie shower'. Some people just have no sense of humor.

I'll admit it-I have been to a dog birthday party. My son and a dachshund I know share the same b-day. It was in NYC-I live in Calif. We were visiting and just like many of you do here-I met up with some doggie internet friends and we met for a lunch/party-there were hats and everything-LOL. One of the ladies leans over and whispers "You only have to wear them a few minutes" LOL. I will even go as far to admit that I participate in a dachshund Secret Santa exchange every year with the same Internet friends. We send dogs toys and treats. Yep-I'm over the top. I'm one of them. They are a very diverse group of people with our common bond-dachshunds and every one of them that I have met in person has been an honorable, kind person. Now you know all my secrets

StressCadet...how neat! Our 'new' pup Dakota (almost 19) months emails her 'sister' Bailey in South Dakota, and Bailey emails her back. It all started after we drove to SD to buy a pup and I thought the owner would like to hear about Dakota's long car trip back to Florida and her new home. His girlfriend (at that time) started emailing and we have all remained friends. Kota even emails Bailey and brother Ben treats once in awhile. Dakota, Bailey and Ben came from a litter of 13.

You may want to continue to keep this a secret.

We wore party hats, too. So did some of the dogs. At least long enough to take some pictures. Actually, it was kinda fun.

I think it's cute that you participate in a secret Santa exchange. Hey, dogs are people, too.

                      Doggy Party

We have good friends who have a neighbor with a dog and a doggie door. Apparently these neighbors came home and the house was full of dogs. It seems that their dear pet decided to throw a party.\!

The funniest part, according to the story my friends told us, was that their neighbors weren't upset about all the dogs - they were so proud that their own dog didn't get on the furniture - although his buddies did.

                        Shaggy: Off-topic, more on Pugs

                        Shaggy,

I see you are in NC. I just moved to central Virginia last year. My next door neighbor was the first person I met when we purchased this home. AND, he happens to be the president of a Pug Rescue group -- A group that is headquartered in NC. He has two Pugs, and a Rotti. He drives back and forth about 3x a month, from VA to NC. He says there were not many Pug owners here when he first got a Pug. (now, more than 54 in our Playgroup)

I just thought this was quite a coincidence when I first met him. What are the chances of meeting (and living next door to) the head of a Pug Rescue group, when you own a Pug?

He has all sorts of Pug paraphanelia: welcome mats; door bells; clocks, etc. You name it, he probably has it or has had it.
                        hope this info helps,

                        sxmdee

Zowie, I need to meet up with this group. I am a cat lover who had her heart stolen by a darling pug named Monkey. If you want to see her pics let me know. I don't know how to do a link to my albums at snapfish, but I'll send you a invite to see the pics. Hugs, from one pug lover to another!!

                            Dog party at our house.

When my DD & I were in Hawaii this past Sept, either DS or DH didn't pull the back door shut on their way out in the morning (DS got the blame) and our 3 dogs, my Black lab pup, a sheltie, and australian cattle dog got in and had a real dog party.

Of course my pup being the youngest & wildest took the blame - garbage was strewn from one end of the house to the other, they got into a can of brewers yeast and managed to spread it all over the kitchen. Anything they could get into, they did. Fortuneatly, all the inner doors to the bed & baths were shut so it was the kitchen, dining room , living room & halls that took the brunt of it.

My Dad is 88 and lives in our garage apartment thought it odd that he hadn't heard the dogs barking but didn't go to see why.

DS got to clean it up. I was glad I was in Hawaii.
