  • American Idol's "Cruel Judges" Controversy

New `Idol' Season Shows Mean Streak

NEW YORK (AP) -- ''Even the juggling was pathetic.'' With that cutting blow, Simon Cowell ended Jason Anderson's moment in the spotlight. Anderson, all of 16, stormed out of his ''American Idol'' audition into his family's arms, obscenities flowing as freely as the tears.

High school can be vicious enough. But not as nasty as Cowell, who also told the would-be singer/juggler that he ''summed up Minneapolis, mate -- useless.''

The ''American Idol'' juggernaut has become ever more popular in this, its sixth season. But it sure seems meaner, too. At least that's the talk this week as the judges -- not just the acerbic Cowell, but the usually genial Randy Jackson and the kind but loopy Paula Abdul -- up the torture quotient, taking train-wreck TV viewing to a whole new level.

And then there's this from the show The View:

    QUESTION:

If you're watching AI's audition/reject shows, does it seem nastier than past seasons? And what do you think of the constant allegations (now Rosie O'Donnel) that Paula is always drunk?

And by extension, are Americans becoming meanier, more like bullies, verbally if not physically?

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed and those who are cold and are not clothed."

I noticed that Simon uses the line, I am not trying to be rude But...... A few times he told them that there act was the worst he had seen, The best line was today they heard the worst ever and you are the worst of today. there was 1 or 2 that got turned down that I might of put into the next round. But how could some of these people really think they can sing.

I never watch the show but have seen some bits and pieces. Not as good as the old "Gong show" we used to watch when I went out to lunch at one of my former jobs. Paula Abdul does do a pretty good Chuck once in a while tho.

I could possibly understand the criticism if this was the first series of the programme. As it has been on before, those 'auditioning' must be blind, deaf or stupid - possibly some combination of the above, if they don't know what to expect. Simon Cowell is just as direct in the UK version.

Keep in mind that all these folks are prescreened & I think some of the bad ones know they are bad and are just there for their moment of fame

Let's hope to God that they know they are bad! If not, they have serious problems. Unfortunately, these kind of shows treat the freaks as though they are "normal", giving credibility to other freaks.

You can't do anything but laugh at them.

I agree.....Even if it were possible that they didn't know, their friends or family would tell them.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

I don't mind so much that they tell people that they have no talent

But this past show, Simon told someone he looked like Bush Baby!

I don't think it is a good idea to tell people they are ugly, or make fun of what they look like........

But then again, did you see the daughter with the mom who got to come in a watch her audition!!!

same old mean old Mr. Simon

I don't think the judges are any more cruel this year than in the past. They are just getting on the New York Times radar screen and if you get on that then everyone is talking about it.

I felt sorry for Jason Anderson when he came out not because of what Simon said but because he was upset that his chance at being famous was over.

He mother of course assured him that he would be.

I think it is reality shows like American Idol (and I enjoy watching it) that is fueling this drive to fame...anyone can be famous without seeminly paying your dues, working hard, etc.

There was a commercial on TV the other night I saw about some kid dancing and everyone in the world was watching him on some Youtube sort of thing.

There is just something that bothers me about it. Maybe it is because I am getting older I don't care about being "famous" anymore...and fortune well I have family and friends that love me...I will take that over fame any day.

                        Popularity of the show

allows judges to leeway to be be non-politically correct in their comments. i am not saying that it is right but many people watching almost expect and are entertained by Simon denigrating every candidate.
