    The Jesus Family Tomb....

    Jesus Family Tomb Believed Found
    Jennifer Viegas, Discovery News

Feb. 25, 2007 — New scientific evidence, including DNA analysis conducted at one of the world's foremost molecular genetics laboratories, as well as studies by leading scholars, suggests a 2,000-year-old Jerusalem tomb could have once held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth and his family.
The findings also suggest that Jesus and Mary Magdalene might have produced a son named Judah.

The DNA findings, alongside statistical conclusions made about the artifacts — originally excavated in 1980 — open a potentially significant chapter in Biblical archaeological history.

A documentary presenting the evidence, "The Lost Tomb of Jesus," will premiere on the Discovery Channel on March 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The documentary comes from executive producer James Cameron and director Simcha Jacobovici.

    The Talpiot Tomb

On March 28, 1980, a construction crew developing an apartment complex in Talpiot, Jerusalem, uncovered a tomb, which archaeologists from the Israeli Antiquities Authority excavated shortly thereafter. Archaeologist Shimon Gibson surveyed the site and drew a layout plan. Scholar L.Y. Rahmani later published "A Catalogue of Jewish Ossuaries" that described 10 ossuaries, or limestone bone boxes, found in the tomb.

Scholars know that from 30 B.C. to 70 A.D., many people in Jerusalem would first wrap bodies in shrouds after death. The bodies were then placed in carved rock tombs, where they decomposed for a year before the bones were placed in an ossuary.

Five of the 10 discovered boxes in the Talpiot tomb were inscribed with names believed to be associated with key figures in the New Testament: Jesus, Mary, Matthew, Joseph and Mary Magdalene. A sixth inscription, written in Aramaic, translates to "Judah Son of Jesus."

"Such tombs are very typical for that region," Aaron Brody, associate professor of Bible and archaeology at the Pacific School of Religion and director of California's Bade Museum told Discovery News.

    Ossuary Inscriptions

At least four leading epigraphers have corroborated the ossuary inscriptions for the documentary, according to the Discovery Channel.

Frank Moore Cross, a professor emeritus in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University, told Discovery News, "The inscriptions are from the Herodian Period (which occurred from around 1 B.C. to 1 A.D.). The use of limestone ossuaries and the varied script styles are characteristic of that time."

Jodi Magness, associate department chair of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, told Discovery News that, based on the New Testament writings, "Jesus likely lived during the first century A.D."

In addition to the "Judah son of Jesus" inscription, which is written in Aramaic on one of the ossuaries, another limestone burial box is labeled in Aramaic with "Jesus Son of Joseph." Another bears the Hebrew inscription "Maria," a Latin version of "Miriam," or, in English, "Mary." Yet another ossuary inscription, written in Hebrew, reads "Matia," the original Hebrew word for "Matthew." Only one of the inscriptions is written in Greek. It reads, "Mariamene e Mara," which can be translated as, "Mary known as the master."

Francois Bovon, professor of the history of religion at Harvard University, told Discovery News, "Mariamene, or Mariamne, probably was the actual name given to Mary Magdalene."

Bovon explained that he and a colleague discovered a fourteenth century copy in Greek of a fourth century text that contains the most complete version of the "Acts of Philip" ever found. Although not included in the Bible, the "Acts of Philip" mentions the apostles and Mariamne, sister of the apostle Philip.

"When Philip is weak, she is strong," Bovon said. "She likely was a great teacher who even inspired her own sect of followers, called Mariamnists, who existed from around the 2nd to the 3rd century."

    DNA Analysis

Jacobovici, director, producer and writer of "The Lost Tomb of Jesus," and his team obtained two sets of samples from the ossuaries for DNA and chemical analysis. The first set consisted of bits of matter taken from the "Jesus Son of Joseph" and "Mariamene e Mara" ossuaries. The second set consisted of patina — a chemical film encrustation on one of the limestone boxes.

The human remains were analyzed by Carney Matheson, a scientist at the Paleo-DNA Laboratory at Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada. Mitochondrial DNA examination determined the individual in the Jesus ossuary and the person in the ossuary linked to Mary Magdalene were not related.

Since tombs normally contain either blood relations or spouses, Jacobovici and his team suggest it is possible Jesus and Mary Magdalene were a couple. "Judah," whom they indicate may have been their son, could have been the "lad" described in the Gospel of John as sleeping in Jesus' lap at the Last Supper.

Robert Genna, director of the Suffolk County Crime Laboratory in New York, analyzed both the patina taken from the Talpiot Tomb and chemical residue obtained from the "James" ossuary, which was also found around 1980, but subsequently disappeared and resurfaced in the antiquities market. Although controversy surrounds this burial box, Genna found that the two patinas matched.

"The samples were consistent with each other," Genna told Discovery News.

Upon examining the tomb, the filmmakers determined a space exists that would have fit the "James" ossuary. Given the patina match and this observation, Jacobovici theorizes the lost burial box could, in fact, be the "James" ossuary.

    Statistical Data

A possible argument against the Talpiot Tomb being the Jesus Family Tomb is that the collection of names on the ossuary inscriptions could be coincidental.

But Andrey Feuerverger, professor of statistics and mathematics at the University of Toronto, recently conducted a study addressing the probabilities that will soon be published in a leading statistical journal.

James Cameron was on the Today show this morning. they said that the chance of this grouping of names being another family was one in a hundred. or maybe higher. It was pretty astonishing. this scenario was alluded to in The Davince Code and also in a book by Kathy Reichs I believe called Cross Bones. At the time it seemed far fetched, but after hearing aobut it this morning it is worth thinking about. They s aid the they have discovered Mary Magdaline's real name was something else (can't remember it), which they didn't know 27 years ago when they discovered this family tomb. That other name is on the tomb.

I saw him this morning, too.....Not only do they think that they have Jesus & Mary Magdaline's tomb, but they believe they have the tomb of the son of Jesus, along with the Virgin Mary.

Yes, ironically it does mimic the Da Vinci Code story. Very interesting!!!!

The DaVinci Code is a novel of pure fiction. The obvious is that scientists are now looking for evidence of a child, product of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, and are now finding it--probably because of the novel. I don't believe it at all. I am starting to doubt scientists. How gullible do they think we are?

Ok, my religious beliefs aside, does anyone else think that The Discovery Channel (and the History Channel, etc) have an anti-Christian agenda? They seem to have been on a kick recently with all these shows. Every time I turn around they are showing something to refute the Bible. The gospel of Judas being the most recent.

Maybe I have missed the programs that support the Bible's teaching? There is a lot of historical evidence to support the Bible as well, but these channels seem very one-sided to me. It is very possible that they do show the supporting evidence as well and I just don't notice; the anti-stuff really catches my attention.

I agree, Tanya. I think there is a general attack on Christianity and it could result in many people turning away from those beliefs.

I watched these scientists on The Today Show this morning as well and they said just because they may have found Jesus' bones in a different grave, does not necessarily change what Christian believe is true. Jesus rose from the dead with his body, bones included. He used a borrowed grave.

So if we want to find the source of all truth, we go to Hollywood? Nothing against your informative post Angela but I truly do not believe everything I see on TV or read in the paper.

I don't believe that I said any of this is true. I think that I said it is interesting. The information is being put out there by scientist, and is documented by many in the field. We can each choose to read or watch it, or not to do so. We can then form our own opinion, and believe whatever we choose to believe.

I think I'll have to get in the line under the heading "anti-Christian agenda" as far as TV goes.

I thought it was a very interesting article. Thanks for the heads-up!

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you were saying it was the truth. Just once its shown on tv then people accept it as the only truth, that's all.

There was a time when you would be tortured to death for questioning the church. For years much of the history of the Bible and Catholicism were kept secret. It's nice to see some things come out now. Religion is based on faith, logic and science will not make you a believer.

Religion and Politics will always be two topics that will get people to dig in...

I will be curious about what the church says as frankly this could be proof that the bible was based on real events and real people. Sure, it might conflict some beliefs but I think this may be real interesting to see what happens.

Perhaps the second coming has more do with DNA testing and the discovery that there are those among us that are related. I don't see that as impossible.

Now, if they do DNA testing and somehow show that the European Royal families are really blood relatives of Jesus (or even related to the people from this tomb) well, I will be some shocked!

Hey, I was not around a couple thousand years ago but what if the prophecy of the 2nd coming would be the discovery that the descendent's are still here? Makes a person wonder....

When Hitler decided all Jewish people needed to be put to death, it was after much subtle talk by the masses, that went on for years, against their faith. This seemed to be justification for killing people back then. Christians have to worry now about being called fanatic for believing in what the Bible tells us and what we have known all our lives to be true.

Rosie O'Donnell ridiculed Christians a few months ago and said we scared her more than the terrorists. People applauded. I will never watch that show again. I used to respect all of those women on The View, but now I see them as feeding the fire against those of us who believe. The general attitude among non-believers is that we are all stupid to believe in God.

Faith is the belief of things you cannot see, that is true. But it is something that you also feel deep in your soul. How do you explain spiritual things that happen, if not for a God? I have had incidents happen in my life that can only be explained as coming through the spirit. I knew my grandmother was ill a few months ago. The smell of my den suddenly smelled exactly like the storeroom on the farm. I knew Grandma was in trouble and told Rick and my stepdad. We got the call the next day from my uncle. I also knew when Rick was being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, having been hurt on duty (he is a firefighter for Denver). I was having dinner at IHOP with my nephew who was spending a few days with us. This was before I had a cell phone. I jumped up from the table and ran to the hostess and asked to borrow her phone because the pay phone was broken. She handed me the phone with a strange look on her face. Sure enough, Rick had been hurt, had fallen and was on his way to the hospital. "How did you know" was the question so many people asked that day. I can only explain it one way.

You think a holocaust could not happen? Think again. Not only are there folks who are trying to say the holocaust never happened, there are people who would jump right in against Christians. Mob mentality. The applause when Rose said that about Christians is proof of mob mentality. I wish I didn't know as much as I do about Nazi Germany. I studied those times in College and started researching a lot more on my own for a paper I wrote back then. It sickens me to think of what could happen, if the climate gets worse.

There's a few inconsistencies in the article. The book of John refers to "The disciple whom Jesus loved" reclining by his side, not on him. It is generally accepted that this was in reference to John himself.
Also, there could not have been a body of Jesus in a family tomb because it was originally buried separately with a guard posted outside. The body subsequently went missing within three days because he rose again.

Do they realise how common the names Miriem, Maria and Mary is? It's like Tony for Italians.
