Mills is booted off US dance show

Heather Mills McCartney has been voted off hit TV show Dancing with the Stars, the US version of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing.

The 39-year-old and her dance partner Jonathan Roberts made it to the sixth week of the knock-out competition.

The former model, who has an artificial leg, said she was not surprised to be voted off and had a farewell speech hidden inside her costume.

She said the public response to her participation had been "overwhelming".

The judges ranked Mills and Roberts fifth out of the seven remaining pairs on Tuesday's show on the ABC network.

But the public vote, which counts for half of the rankings, went against them.

On hearing the result, she said: "We knew we were going out. We were in the bottom two last week."

Mills, who donated her performance fee to vegetarian charity Viva!, added she "raised a fortune", which meant "hundreds of thousands of animals' lives will be saved".

Mills later failed to turn up for an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel's late-night talk show on ABC to talk about her participation in the contest.

The former model lost her left leg below the knee in a 1993 traffic accident.

She said she joined the contest to show people it was possible to overcome a disability and raise money for charity.

In the UK, Mills has been vilified by some sections of the press over her divorce from Sir Paul McCartney.

Good for her. Charity cause is a good one, and she performed really well, I thought. But nobody is going to beat Joey Fatone (sp?) That guy is one heck of a dancer!

Oh yeah? There are a couple of serious contenders. In fact two other couples got higher scores than he did last time around.

Actually, Carol, I think Joey Fatone is going to come in third. I think the final two will be Apolo Anton Ono and Laila Ali. I'm not sure which one will win...

Now Joey *could* win because of the popular vote...and he's a good dancer, no doubt. Just not as good as the other two.

Popularity definitely factors in. That is the only reason John Ratzenburger and Billy Ray Cyrus are still there. John gets the geezer vote, and Billy Ray's daughter is the immensely popular preteens Hannah Montana.
