Swayze Diagnosed With Pancreatic Cancer - AOL News

publicist for 'Dirty Dancing' heartthrob Patrick Swayze, 55, has confirmed that the actor is battling pancreatic cancer, but dismisses reports claiming he only has weeks to live. Another statement, from his doctor, alludes that the actor "has a very limited amount of disease."

The actor, 55, has a very limited amount of disease and appears to be responding well to treatment, according to Dr. George Fisher, Swayze's physician. Fisher's prognosis was included in a statement released Wednesday by Swayze's representative, Annett Wolf. The statement further dismisses reports in the tabloid media that portrayed him in grave condition with only weeks to live.

The New York Post reported on its Web site Wednesday that Swayze was diagnosed more than a month ago. The Post story follows similar reports in the tabloid press.

According to the Post, the average life expectancy is six to nine months, with only 4 percent of patients live more than five years. Get More Information on Pancreatic Cancer

A statement released by Swayze's representative to TMZ says the actor is responding to treatment for the disease:

"Patrick's physician Dr. George Fisher states, 'Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far. All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue."

"We are considerably more optimistic.' Patrick is continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects. The outpouring of support and concern he has already received from the public is deeply appreciated by Patrick and his family."

I heard about him this morning, but not any of the details. How sad. Pancreatic cancer is a horrible disease. We lost my dad to it. One of the problems is that it usually isn't detected until it's too late for effective treatment. It is also what Michael Landon died from.

My Father In Law died from Pancreatic cancer. He actually battled it for 2 years. He was considered one of the lucky ones.
I have a neighbor here that was diagnosed and gone within a couple months because it spread to the liver so quickly.
I am sorry for anyone who is diagnosed with this terrible disease.
The problem with real life is that there is no background music.

My dad was gone in about 6 weeks after diagnosis. He also chose not to have any treatment. He said that at his age he already felt that much of his life (since he survived WWII) was a gift. I was truly lucky that I was able to be with him and my mom the weekend he passed away.

Wow Luanne...that is so sad. Sorry about your dad.

You know, if it turns out that the reports are really true and that he does have a very short time left, fans are going to be pretty upset that it was kept quiet.

          Great actor/dancer and heartthrob.

Too bad about the fans. Everyone has to deal with their illnesses in their own way. I haven't read the articles yet, so I have no idea when it was even diagnosed.

I actually agree with this, and didn't mean to imply otherwise. Just commenting on the craziness of fans out there who often feel entitled to know all aspects of their idol's lives.

Well, it sounds as if he only knew for a month. He may have only gotten his prognosis in the past week or so.

I hope Patrick Swayze pulls through. Also, I hope this announcement brings some much-needed attention to this disease.

This is what took my dad's life. He lived 60 days after finding out he had it. It was forty years ago in Feb.

Don't know prevelance but my aunt died 3 months after her diagnosis. Also had a female coworker who died shortly after diagnosis but Dr's fooled around for months telling her there was nothing wrong with her before she changed drs and got an instant diagnosis..

My dad also died of it at the age of 55...6 wks from diagnosis to death. By the time they found it, the cancer was so widespread, he decided not to have treatment. The doc said it would be so strong that the treatment would have killed him sooner.

My prayers to he and his family.
