I am just finishing the story of Greg Mortenson. In the 80's and 90's he was a mountain climber of the large peaks in Pakistan. During one of his trips, his eyes were opened to the needs of the mountain villages in Pakistan and Afghanistan for school buildings so the village children could become educated. Greg is a gifted person who was able to collaborate over the years with the local people and work with them on a mutual vision. His life work is an example of the ineffectiveness of war - that the answers to fear and hate is building bridges to other cultures.
In Seattle there is planned outreach to villages in Central America and to Cambodia. The people involved go into villages and begin to improve the standard of living with water systems, gifts or loans to start small businesses and buy land to farm.
One of my amazing friends is working with a Cambodian village. She goes once a year for several weeks and is watching this village change. She comes back to her circle of friends here and gives the vision to us of the rather minor things we can contribute to improve the standard of living.
Our world would be different if we gave of our time to just one person or group that would empower them .
