Mellencamp's had to contact both John McCain and the "National Organization for Marriage" (which opposes same-sex marriage) to protest their use of this song. To quote his publicist's letter to NOM, "Mr. Mellencamp's views on same sex marriage and equal rights for people of all sexual orientations are at odds with NOM's stated agenda" so he requested they "find music from a source more in harmony with your views than Mr. Mellencamp in the future."
Speaking as a current resident, now ain't that Indiana? I've seen many an East- or West-Coast star in the same situation send a letter via their lawyer full of sound and fury and threats carefully couched in legal jargon. Mellencamp has his publicist (likely a relative or a relative of a former wife ) send a letter reeking of classic midwest politeness with just a sting of sarcasm.
