In August of 2003 we were on the Big Island, staying for a couple of days at B&B Mt. View, halfway between Hilo and Volcano, before we checked in at Mauna Loa Village.
We went to the Borders bookstore in Hilo, mostly to check e-mail. Shortly after we arrived, the store staff started rerranging the floor, setting up chairs and putting up a a microphone. Then about half an hour later Keola Beamer came by and did a free concert right there in the bookstore, for about one hour. There were about 100 people congregated around in the store. When he did Honolulu City Lights there was a big round of applause.
He brought his Mom with him, and for about one-third of the program she did hula (authentic hula - she's native), and about one-third she sang with him. It was a wonderful bit of serendipity.

This song ah this song, originally released 25 + years ago. NYC was bankrupt and the politicos in Washington told us to take a hike when we needed $$. It took on a much different meaning for me and many, many others. My city. My building.
