Close to a quint, but not quite.

                *****

I need to digress and provide some history on this link.

Back in the early 1960's Odetta did a session for Riverside in which she fronted a first-rate jazz combo of the type commonly used as backup band for blues vocalists in the 1930's - piano, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, string bass, and drums. She then covered a number of classics from blues singers of that era, such as Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Mamie Smith, following their style. The result was stunning. Odetta's voice was magnificent, and if you didn't know otherwise you could think she was a classic blues singer of that era.

I stumbled across the album when I was in college in St. Louis, prowling through the punch out bin in a record store. (How many of you even know what a punch out bin was? Now we have a whole generation who doesn't even know what a record store was!!) Anyway, they had about 20 copies of the album in the bin. The price was right, so I grabbed one of the LPs, just based on the fact that it was Odetta and it was blues.

I had previously heard Odetta on an early Vanguard release of hers, in which she was singing with just acoustic guitar, doing southern field songs. The typical sort of stuff that one heard in the "Folk Revival" era, and Odetta had become known in the "serious music" crowd for doing "real " folk music, not the "pop" folk of groups like Kingston Trio, New Christy Minstrels, Folksmen, and Mitch & Mickey. So when I got home and put this on the machine I was completely blown away and captivated by it. It moved to the front of my rack and stayed there.

Then I played it for my brother and SIL. They liked it so much I gave it to them figuring I could go back to the store and get another. Alas - the record was gone from the punch out bin. I then learned that the reason it was in the bin was because it had gone out of circulation and the distributor was clearing out all of the inventory. Meanwhile, my brother had a flood in his basement that destroyed his record collection, Odettas included. Periodically I would try to find the record; on the few occasions when I did see a copy floating around it had become a collectors item, with used copies in questionable condition selling for $50 or more.

For many years I really missed the album. Eventually the Riverside tape library was acquired by Fantasy Records, who reengineered the audio and rereleased the material on CD. When I saw the CD it was an auto-buy. Then I made the mistake of playing it for my kids, and one time when I was without a CD player for awhile I let them borrow from my collection. Odetta was grabbed by one of them and I never saw that one again. But being in release I was now able to repurchase it, and I've ripped it into my collection so it will never be lost again as long as my drives and backups are intact.

                ******

And now with all of that intro out of the way, here's Odetta doing "Go Down, Sunshine" ...

A final comment on the Odetta and the Blues album. When the record was released she took a lot of criticism from her fans because it wasn't a "folk music" album. Much the same way that Bob Dylan got booed at Newport because he started playing with an electric guitar. Dylan, of course, ignored them and went on to change the face of American music. Guess it was hard for some small-minded people to appreciate that some artists don't like to be pigeon-holed.
