hmmm my first soundtrack album was the Wizard of Oz.

Huh, for some reason I hadn't even thought of musicals. Dunno which was first, but I listened to Camelot, the King and I, Oklahoma, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, South Pacific (which I have never seen but would like to), The Music Man (which I've tried to watch a couple of times but got bored ), and I think Carousel (also haven't seen). The music of my childhood.

Didn't have The Wizard of Oz, though. Watched it every year and loved it, but for whatever reason we never got around to buying the album.

I guess I didn't think of them as soundtracks because the instrumentals (the overture, etc.) were re-workings of the songs they sang, and I think of soundtracks as having incidental or background music or themes (and if they don't, I complain!). Musicals have those and use them, but it's generally a song that the character sings at some point, and they don't make it to the soundtrack album.
