Nice. Some of the imagery makes me remember all the fuss when the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall went up -- it was called "nihilistic" and "a black gash of shame." My uncle, who'd served in Viet Nam, didn't like it at first, and he was not alone! But I don't know anyone who has been to it (including my uncle, after he'd been convinced to see one of the traveling replicas) who wasn't profoundly moved by it.

The first time we went to see it, (DH couldn't bring himself to before this), we had gone down to Parris Island to see DS graduate from boot camp, and the three of us went. It was late spring and very crowded, there wasn't a dry eye there. There was a huge group of vets on motorcycles ~ and the biggest thing to make an impression on me was all these vets shaking hands with everyone and saying, "Welcome Home, Bro".

Yeah, I'd have a hard time just thinking of the people I've known who went -- can't imagine how hard it must be for those who'd gone! But, as your example points out, it can be a healing pain.
