Abandoning you for a week to go visit my parents. Abandoning hubby and the kids, too, but I'm talking along the kids' adopted grandma from church. She's traveled all over the world, but all she's seen of Iowa is Davenport, all she's seen of Wisconsin Dells is the defunct attraction the Biblical Garden, and she hasn't seen Minnesota, South Dakota, or Nebraska at all! So that should be fun. Gonna take her to Coralville to see the fossils, and out to Mitchell to see the Corn Palace, and down to Omaha to do city stuff.

I'll do my best. Have to confess I like this part of the country better, and I'm not looking forward to the wind. But we'll be doing the Spam Museum on the drive back, so I'll have that to look forward to.

Busy! But we didn't make the Spam Museum. Drove past it before it opened. A couple of days I let dad run with his "let me drive you around and show you all the houses we didn't buy and places owned by people you don't know and other points of interest like a casino in the middle of nowhere" routine; not sure if Grandma Pat liked that part but I figured I'd owed him, since he ferried us everywhere (besides, he did most of that on the way to local stuff, without warning, as is his habit when it's not just the two of us). Plus dad paid for pretty much everything -- even when he didn't go! He paid for us at the General Dodge House and then ducked out to do a Railway Museum, for instance. I would guess it was less running around than Pat wanted to do, and it was definitely more running around than I wanted to do, but that considered, I think everyone had a pretty good time.

The prehistoric village archaeological dig in Mitchell, S.D. was great -- mostly because of the docent, who really knew his stuff. And I liked the train station museum in Omaha quite well -- terrific architecture, info and a model of the 1898 World's Fair (pretty clearly influenced by the 1893 Chicago one, I would guess), and great murals. The Old Courthouse in Sioux Falls had some nice murals, too, and a small but surprisingly broad display of local Indian stuff, including some lovely Indian beadwork. I noticed what looked like some Woodland Indian beadwork there -- I'm no expert, but the plains tribes tended more toward geometric and the Woodland toward florals and I recognize a few of the classics -- and although it was identified as Sioux work (or owned by a Sioux Indian-?), the card noted that it was indeed a Woodland pattern. It's amazing how stuff spread via trade, long before even canal travel and the like.

I think it's funny the video still is of the drummer -- Phil Collins did the drumming for this, and that's not Phil!

                    • Sounds like you had a real busy week!! Think you get an A+ in patience, and it was really nice of you to do this for Grandma Pat ~ I had to laugh at the description of your Dad's tour guide routine! Kudos to you ~ what goes around comes around!

Well, we did something every day, but we really only left the Sioux Falls area twice (unless you count a brief foray into Minnesota for a casino that relies on Sioux Falls for most of its day visitors). So we weren't going very hard, really.

I was surprised that Pat hadn't done a lot of stuff we did -- she'd never gone somewhere you could wander around and see fossils in the rocks under your feet (Coralville, IA), she'd never done a butterfly house (Sioux Falls), and she'd never done an archaeological dig on ancient American Indians (Mitchell). And she still hasn't done the Spam museum. She's traveled a lot, but she mostly does bus tours, so maybe they're not into that kind of stuff.

Pat has been a real blessing to us, so I was glad to be able to take her someplace she hadn't been.

I think I'd like Chagall Guevara oodles more if their songs were remixed and the singing was kicked up a bit. This is a catchy tune and I like the chorus, but it makes me think of a movie where I'm straining to hear the dialogue past the annoying sound track.

They are lovely, and the Sioux Falls one has somewhat different ones every time we go (most of the local places only have them for a few months of the year, and not as much variety seems to me). The butterflies always like me (because I use lavender-scented powder and stuff, maybe), meaning I usually have one sitting on me, and I can never decide if I'm happy about that or not. On my clothes it's not a big deal, but when they sit on my hand for a while, I'm very aware that, when it gets right down to it, they are bugs. Plus, where ever they settle, I'm always afraid I'll bump them into something and hurt them as I wander around. OTOH, my love for the little buttonquail the Sioux Falls one has to keep the ants down is less complicated.
