It is! Ditto Shenandoah Valley, which in some ways I liked even more than the National Park -- some of the roads back to our resort had great views, and I love the view of Massanutten Mountain pretty much anywhere from I-81. For some reason I love roads that are in a wide flat valley with mountains to either side.

Actually, we only did the northern third of Skyline Drive -- and the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley, for that matter -- so we missed some of the supposedly most spectacular views, but what we saw was lovely. Plus, one of the first things we saw was a bear mama and cub! No traffic, so we stopped the car and watched them for a while. Cub ran up a tree and kept peeking out at us, then he realized mama had wandered off and finally ran after her. We didn't watch them until they were out of sight because we'd seen so much of them up close seemed silly to hang around until they topped the crest or whatever.

Also saw many, many deer around the resort; second last day we watched a couple that were four or five feet from the car; last time we got that close to a deer in the wild was at Cade's Cove in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, when a deer was right up against a fence by the road. We see deer so much around home that we don't get too excited about deer a little ways off, but having one that close is pretty unusual!

We stayed at the Pines, above Mount Jackson; a nice resort, but we were in one of the units furthest in, and middle daughter got an upset tummy a couple of times while we were there. Twisty roads don't get to my tummy if I'm driving or in the front seat, but unless you can see out a good ways (we had a nice deck with a great view of the trees....), I like looking at the mountains better than being well in them, so we'll give one of the Massanutten Resorts a shot next time we're out. That complex is closer to the second two thirds of Skyline Drive anyhow.

Got back to discover dad's radiation therapy is being delayed and he's on a less-effective hormone therapy until they can get that going. On the upside, mom and dad must've misunderstood someone -- although his I-forget-what counts are still high enough they want radiation therapy, so far as they can tell the cancer has *not* spread to his lymph nodes yet, so I was happy to hear that part!

So glad you had a good time. We stayed in the Woodstone units at Massanutten a while back ~ units were beautiful and the scenery was great!

Not exactly based on Robert Heinlein's book, "The Door Into Summer," but still inspired by it.

What we've been dealing with, although it's supposed to be sunny this weekend.

Have an exciting 4th planned? We're going to my aunt and uncle's 50th in Iowa. It'll be nice to see everyone, but I'm unenthused about the Iowa in July part.

This song was my first thought; I think I've been reading too many crime stats lately.

While I may have some doubts about that tale, I'd guess you were younger your wedding day than I was on mine (I was 27).

I think there must've been an inversion here -- drove home the night of the 4th through a smoky haze that lasted from the airport in Chicago about twenty miles into Indiana. Hubby kept saying it was the fireworks; I'd say they contributed, but mostly it was bonfires, going on the strong smell of wood smoke.

By the time I was 27, I'd had 3 kids!! Regarding the fires ~ there's been awful wildfires up in Canada ( BC I think), but we're getting the smoke and haze out here in Boston ~ I wouldn't doubt that you were seeing some of that!

Duh! I expect you're right. Although we did see a couple of bonfires, which I'd not associated with July 4th before, but I guess toasting marshmallows while waiting for the fireworks is a thing.

Not sure how that connects, but haven't heard that song for a while, so I'm good.

What these lyrics mean I haven't a clue (well, maybe I have a clue, if Snow is the "father"), but I really like this song.
