Days of Wine and Roses - Henry Mancini

Lots of covers of this tune around. But I think Mancini's instrumental original is best, as it is the most melancholy. Days of Wine and Roses was the theme for the movie showing the effects of alcoholism, and that atmosphere is captured most effectively by Mancini. I especially like the covers by Frank Sinatra/Nelson Riddle and Ella Fitzgerald, but they don't capture the mood as well as Mancini.

              A well deserved Academy Award

Of the versions that I've heard with lyrics, I think that Tony Bennett is one of my favorites.

Andy Williams cover was also popular, and is also quite well done, catching much the underlying mood as well, but it still comes across to me as a bit "rosy".

              From Wikipedia:

Director Blake Edwards became a non-drinker a year after completing the film and went into substance recovery. He said that he and Jack Lemmon were heavy drinkers while making the film.[5] Edwards used the theme of alcohol abuse often in his films, including: 10 (1979), Blind Date (1987) and Skin Deep (1989). Both Lemmon and Remick sought help from Alcoholics Anonymous long after they had completed the film. Lemmon revealed to James Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio his past drinking problems and his recovery. The film had a lasting effect in reinforcing the growing social acceptance of Alcoholics Anonymous.[6]
And here is the trailer for the movie - pretty unusual, as Jack Lemmon talks about the role and the movie. Not the usual stuff you get in a trailer.

A cover of this Howlin' Wolf classic by the Stones, from a time when Keith Richards face didn't look as if it had been run over by many an 18-wheeler.

A more trenchant person than I once noted that a picture of Keith Richards was almost indistinguishable from the Waffle House Special of the Day. The giveaway was that Keith's warts didn't look at all like pecans.

A garage band classic. (Grunge was the son of garage band.) This is the version by Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels from my youth. (Before some producer had the harebrained idea to record Mitch Ryder with lyrics by Rod McCuen. Seriously. The results were about as bad as you could imagine. About like asking Little Richard to record Carmina Burina.)
