Here's video I didn't know existed - Aretha's Live performance at Fillmore West in March 1971.
I've had a recording of this for years - first on vinyl, then on CD. Listening to the audio I've always thought that most of the recording wasn't particularly special (except for the fact that even mediocre Aretha is still in the top 0.1% of classic R&B), until partway through the the first part of this song, before she comes out for the encore. Seeing the video, I see that is where she got up from the keyboards, started moving, and went into the crowd.
And then it starts cooking when she comes back out for the encore, and brings Ray Charles on stage with her. And viewing the video I can see where the concert edits out much of the jam session with Aretha and the band.
And then it really starts cooking when she has Ray take over on keyboards, which is the second video below.
For those who are interested in such trivia, the backup band is King Curtis plus the Memphis Horns.
I think Fillmore West was the original Fillmore - started by Bill Graham who was a music promoter in San Francisco during the mid-1960's. Named for Fillmore Street in San Francisco, where it was originally located. Later moved to a different when it outgrew the first location.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”
“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”
