Aretha Franklin greatest singer in rock era: poll

    11/11/2008 3:00 PM, Reuters

Aretha Franklin News on Yahoo! Music

She's already the Queen of Soul, but now Aretha Franklin has been named the greatest singer of the rock era in a poll conducted by Rolling Stone magazine.

Franklin, 66, came in ahead of Ray Charles at No. 2, Elvis Presley at No. 3, Sam Cooke at No. 4 and John Lennon at No. 5, according to the magazine's survey of 179 musicians, producers, Rolling Stone editors, and other music-industry insiders.

The 100-strong list will be published on Friday, when Rolling Stone hits the newsstands with four different covers.

Yes, I saw this. What about Freddie Mercury? What about Roy Orbison?

Yeah, I love Aretha Franklin, but more for her interpretation than for her voice. And isn't she the Queen of Soul, not the Queen of Rock n Roll? What's up with that?

Agreed. Queen of Soul, but Supreme Being of Rock ?- I can't see it.

Linda Ronstandt singing "Heat Wave" made her queen of rock.

You just told us your exact age, Mike.

Remember when she was dating Jerry Brown and then he was running for President, and everybody wanted him to win so Linda Ronstadt could be First Mistress?

What a terrible thing to say, Mike. Do you weigh the same as Linda did when she sang "Heat Wave"?

I like Aretha but wouldn't put her in even the top 10 of Rock and Roll.

Here's the VH1 list and frankly, I cannot fathom some of the selections.

Rock On The Net: VH1: 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll

I love Sara Vaughan, but Rock n' Roll ? Hardly.
Baez, Nyro made the list as well. I don't think so. Popular music, yes. R & R, can't see it at all.

That list is unbelievable. At least 80% of them don't belong there because they were not a part of Rock and Roll. Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton were never part of Rock and Roll. They belong in C&W. Many of the others were Rock singers but NOT Rock and Roll. Most of the rest are also in the wrong category.
